Can this guy start?
I've got a pitcher with 5 stamina, 8 sinker, 8 slider and 2 changeup. Hes 24, listed at 6'2" 230, and the OSA ranks him with the elite starting pitchers in the game. Hes been in the league 4 seasons now working out of the bullpen. His expected role is "starting rotation" and his "role on team" morale is "unhappy" because I've got him in the bullpen.
My problem is the game seems to not want to use the guy a lot, even in the bullpen. He has averaged just 49 appearances over the last 4 seasons and only 60 IP. I put him in to the rotation for 2 starts this past season. The first time he was pulled after 4 innings after he gave up 4 runs on 4 hits and 2 BB. Nothing spectacular, but still a quick hook I thought. The second start he lasted 2.1 innings before he left the game with shoulder tightness. I would like to try and start him but I don't want to destroy his arm by giving him too many innings. On the other hand I don't want to destroy his chances at being a starter for the rest of his career and having him regress as a middle reliever. My hunch is to start him regularly and slowly build him up to a 200 IP a season starter. Last edited by esovia23; 05-08-2010 at 02:22 AM. |

Unfortunately, no one every 'builds up' to 200 innings in OOTP. Stamina rarely changes at all. He will either be a decent starter or not, and trying him out in the minors in the only way to tell. Even then in the bigs he may never be more than a reliever.

I've actually had some success increasing a guy's stamina by forcing him to start. Problem is that in OOTP X, pitchers need 3 solid pitches to have starter success. That is what i would look at. IF he only has 2 pitches, keep him in the pen.
