Downloading Lahman database....

OK, probably a stupid question, but here goes anyways....
I don't have Excel on my computer and when I download the Lahman database in csv format and I am prompted to click on the Master file to get up and running, I'm stuck because I have no Excel. Are there other non-Excel files/databases I can download to play historical game?
Thanks

Try Open Office. http://download.openoffice.org/common/instructions.html I believe.

They have an open source version of Excel that can save in excel's format as well and it is free, although you have to download the full office software from their site, but it is a much nicer download than Microsoft Office and the free price is great.

Good Luck!

What exactly is happening when you point the game to your Master CSV file?

Whether you have excel or not should have no bearing on OOTP using the Lahman DB.

I assume you're trying to open it in Excel so you can set up a historical league from Gambo's instructions?

A CSV file is just a comma-delimited text file, which you should be able to open up in any text editor. So if you don't want to bother with OpenOffice, you can always just use WordPad or Notepad (both of which come with Windows) to open the file.

Notepad, however, may balk at the file's size - if that's the case, you can use something like EditPad Lite, which is also free, much smaller than OpenOffice, and can handle big files.

Thanks to all who responded. You were very helpful. I've now imported the database.
