Pre-1965 Drafts

i was curious what some of you historical simmers did for pre-1965, when there was no established draft in the MLB. personally, i like having a draft regardless of time period but for historical accuracy it just wasnt there.

presumably instead of a draft, the incoming rookies get dumped into the FA pool then its a free for all, first come, first served. does anyone follow this historical element in their games?

(and what makes things even more interesting is that the minors, at least early on, were fairly independent until branch rickey came along...so "developing" talent thru the draft and your farm system was really non-existent at first. seemed like a combination of money, scouting and luck).

I have done this in my games. It certainly is a different experience. If you play with fictional players, some of the free agents are major-league ready and can join the big league right away, which makes for some interesting situations.

If you play with real players, teams with a lot of money win out (well, that happens either way), though guys still don't make that much in the beginning most of the time.

Habitually I let the player go to their original team, but just for the fun of it I make one simulation just now with draft from the beginning. Some fact from this one (end of the 1957 season) :

more championship win : the Athletics (KC) 11 in 13
never won a championship : the Dodgers (2) and the Giants (10)
more homerun career : Ted Williams with 559 (Babe Ruth had an end of career injury at 28 years. he had 191 homerun in 624 game and he is the #1 for one season (63 in 1921).

By the way does someone know how to start an historic simulation without the draft and start one in the season 1965. I don't find the way ...

Maybe I'm not following, but it's done just as it would be for any other year. You can turn the draft on or off whenever you want. It is in league options.

This is what I was thinking, but everytime I go to the the game setup option after I start a career this option rest grey and not clickable. Maybe there are a precise date to change this ? This is what I forget in the previous post : start the career in 1901, play untill 1965 and begin to use the draft in this year.

Im pretty much 100% a "What-If" guy, so I always have a draft. If Im simming up to a certain point in history, I usually have players go to their correct RL teams, but just about every league I do starts in 1903 and has an amateur draft every season

Well, I don't really think that the end can be assessed as of itself as being the end because what does the end feel like? It's like saying when you try to extrapolate the end of the universe, you say, if the universe is indeed infinite, then how - what does that mean? How far is all the way, and then if it stops, what's stopping it, and what's behind what's stopping it? So, what's the end, you know, is my question to you.
