OOTP Imitates Real Life

I'm replaying the history of baseball (OOTP-style) and am in the middle of the 1904 season. Doc White of the White Sox just threw his 4th straight shutout and is now up to 40 consecutive scoreless innings.

I checked Doc White's bio and in real life he held the record for consecutive scoreless innings (45) until it was broken in 1968 by Don Drysdale. In fact, 89-year-old Doc was in attendance the night "Big D" broke his mark!

I know the game has no idea who Doc White is, but it's still pretty cool that he's put together a similar streak. Long live OOTP!!!

Nice stuff. Check out this thread.

cool coincidence

Having Tom Phoebus throw 2 shutouts IRL and in the game is up there with lottery odds.

That's pretty wild! I wonder if others have come across similar historical coincidences. Frankly, I would have missed the whole Doc White thing if I didn't auto-sim a day at a time.

Settings

Jah,
Do you mind me asking what sort of set-up you're using? I want to a similar recreation, but am having a hard time finding a good template. Do you control all the teams? What are your trade settings? Are you using re-calc? etc, etc.
Any input would be appreciated.

Fred,

I'll give you some of my basic setup info...if you need more detail, just let me know. Keep in mind, my goal is to have a setup that approximates reality for that era, but I'm not too much of a stickler for everything being dead on (otherwise, I'd never get a season completed!) After messing around with game settings for years, it's fun to just PLAY for a change and not worry about every little detail.

I'm using all the Historical Progressing options (Automatically Expand League, Automatically Adjust League Strategy, Automatically Adjust League Totals) with 3-year recalc. I import historical rookies to their real teams. For the specific Strategy options, I go with the yearly defaults, but I adjusted the steals down from "Very Often" to "Often" (way too many steals in 1901, much better since!) Injury Frequency is "Very Low" and Position Player Fatigue is "Low" - I use these settings since I don't use fictional players and most of the early 20th century teams don't have a lot of players in their organization - seems to work good for now. Scouting, Coaching and Morale options are all turned off (just personal preference).

I use Commissioner Mode and manage teams only in the World Series, if at all (I auto-sim the regular season and "watch" the post-season games). As for trades, I keep them off and try to handle real-life transactions myself (using retrosheet.org). I know that goes against the premise of letting the OOTP world evolve on its own, but, for me, the history of baseball is a learning experience, so I like to follow players on the teams they were really on. I'm 42, so OOTP is like a baseball history lesson for me for any season before 1970!

I let the AI handle all lineups, rotations and non-trade roster transactions (promotions/demotions), plus releasing players - so there is some variance and "alternate reality" going on, which makes it interesting. If a player retired or passed away in real life, I let his career go on in OOTP. On the flip side, I've had a couple of career-ending injuries - so it all balances out.

I'm into my 4th season and am really enjoying it!

Fun, fun game!!
