I need to cheat just this one time...
Ty Cobb was drafted with the 10th overall pick in the 1904 draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. Halfway through the 1910 season he has 1009 hits and a .334/.391/.443 career line.
And he just broke his neck. Career ending injury. I do not accept that! Cobb is going to tough it out and be back on the baseball field the very next day for the Cardinals (even though they released, I'm going to re-sign him). I want to see him try for 4,000 hits damnit, not be done with such a completely random injury. If it was a knee injury, I think I'd accept it. But a broken neck?! No thanks.

Maybe to make it not so much cheating, you can bring Cobb back, and give one of their other main players the CEI

Well, I don't really think that the end can be assessed as of itself as being the end because what does the end feel like? It's like saying when you try to extrapolate the end of the universe, you say, if the universe is indeed infinite, then how - what does that mean? How far is all the way, and then if it stops, what's stopping it, and what's behind what's stopping it? So, what's the end, you know, is my question to you. |

Sounds like that german soccer goalie from years ago! (I can't remember his name, but he carried on playing in a game with a broken bone in his neck)

Just erase the injury and pretend it didnt happen. Anyhow, with CEIs I do the sit out a year thing usually, too. I just got tired of the 20-year-old pitching porspect blowing out his arm whereas a "simple" Tommy John surgery would get him in a year plus, maybe not necessarily the same pitcher but most 20 year olds would at least give a chance. Broken neck? I dont know about that one though. Personally i wouldnt want that in a baseball game (not to say it couldnt happen, but that would be like a once in 50 years injury, yeesh, more a football injury). Has any major leaguer ever broken his neck on the field? I think a former major leaguer named Gail Hopkins did something in an OF collision that killed him in minor league ball circa 1970.
I never really liked the release immediately after the CEI. Seems cold. I have always when personally controlling put them on the DL and let them retire at the end of the season.

Yeah, I only cut complete scrubs when they get the CEIs. Anyone of value is left to retire on their own (cheaper that way, too).

ive done away with cei's altogether. i edited the injury file, leaving only fractured skull as the injury that has potential to be a career ender. i think its really unrealistic to expect a player to retire a day immediately after his injury, regardless of how severe it was. even tony saunders, who suffered a fracture of his pitching arm, managed to rehab and come back, break his arm again and returned several years later in the minors. its an extreme example, but a good one. if nothing else, severe injuries should curtail development in younger players and reduce abilities permanently. this way, a player may still get a chance to catch on in the minors or in another league (if your structure is set up like that) that has less than MLB quality baseball. if he can't catch on with the diminished abilities post-injury, then the player should retire.
i cant really think of any examples IRL of a baseball player getting injured and immediately announcing their retirement.

Cobb bounced back from his 'sprained neck' and played wonderfully the rest of the season. I won't have too much gaming time for the next two weeks, but 1911 is underway. Last time I tried running a historical sim starting in 1901 I got the dreaded 'everybody becomes Mr. Smith' bug somewhere in the 1910s. I'm now backing up the league after every season just in case.

Famous words in a locker room:
"Hey Barry, you should try roids." "But that is cheating, OK, just this one time, it is ok to just cheat one time"

This is one of the reasons I always end up being disappointed with leagues using historical players. I have certain expectations, and when they're not met, it feels less authentic to me.

If you try to duplicate reality then your always gonna be dissappointed. Unless you know the exact lineups, weather conditions, pitching changes etc etc. Besides its already happened anyway. As long as Babe Ruth as a high pctg chance of hitting close to 60 home runs in 1927 im ok with it. If he gets hurt thats just the breaks. Its only one league. I can always run another. Now if he constantly hits only 15 homers when i get to 1927 then i would be more irritated with that result than having him get injured. Thats why i perfer to leave the injuries alone. Its too tempting to do it for one player and then another and then another. Last edited by BaseballMan; 01-31-2008 at 12:36 PM. |

Well, I do only believe in editing with CEIs, if it is one that is season wiper outer . Well, tough. Even if it is a player over 30 or 35, I might not change it if CEI. But, if a guy is 21 or 22, there just not many injuries that will stop them from at least making an attempt. Might take 2-3 years to get healthy enough to try but it will be tried. But if 27 Ruth blows out his knee on opening day ending his season....well, tough poopie.

I almost never change the game. This was just such a freak injury to one of the all-time greats that I couldn't let it happen. If it was a SEI rather than a CEI, I wouldn't have touched it.
