SB problem in 1886-87

I started a historical league in 1871 with total default settings and everything was going great with stats ,then I hit 1886 and 1887, I had one guy get 143 sb and about 4 over 120 and 10 over 100,and bunches of guys over 80 in that 2 yr period. Then in 1888 and beyond things went back to normal. I ran another quick test and got the same results in those 2 yrs. So I dont know if its a era_stats problem,or a era modifier problem, but something is out of whack in those 2 yrs for Sb's. Anyone one else notice this and does anyone know what I can do to fix the problem. thanks.

ERA_Stats checks out Okey-Dokey so does ERA_modifiers so maybe just pot luck?

I checked my 1886 and leader had 47 SB's. Haven't played 1887 yet.

1887 leader had 69 (65 IRL) so I don't generically have the same problem you are facing.

Wow,I dont get it. Not sure why I am having this problem,I just ran another test, the SB leader in 1886 had 117 and 1887 had 125 with 17 guys over 100 in those 2 yrs. Its got me mistified.

How many games are being played? Check that against the real schedule.

Part of the issue may be that, in real life, the definition of what constituted a stolen base changed in 1886, and that definition was quite different from the defintion commonly thought of today.

For the era_stats file, I set the Stolen Base Attempt frequency and the SB% for pre-1898 to the 1901-1909 frequency of mlb.

If we need to change it, I can change it later in a patch or I can post it as a mod.

Check the strategy settings. If steals are still on "Very Often", take them back to average. According to my encyclopedia, steals weren't recorded from 1876-1885. This may have something to do with the new stat kicking in. All these guys with 0 steals in 1885 are being recalculated upwards for 1886.

I have the same problem....SB's are off the charts for me when simulating years 1883 -1887. One leader had over 152 SB's. When cehcking baseball reference.com I see that SB's were really not recorded during the mid 1880's however, the average was around 30-40 a year for SB leaders. Garlon can you post this as a mod to correct this? Thanks!

Just noticed the same thing...about a quarter into the 1886 i change the strategy to rarely for SBs and the leader still ended up with 172

I discovered the solution is to adjust the strategy modifiers. The strategy modifiers are out of whack. I believe this is due to that SB's were not recorded and are not in the league totals for those years. What I did was to set them at the default values of 1.000. You have to do this each year if the auto update option is on. I will continue to do this until I reach the 1890's.

When I created the era_stats file, which the game references each year when calculating the modifiers, I set the SB attempt frequency of the 1876-1885 period to the same rate as it was in 1901-1909 Deadball Era. This may be too high for this period. It is an easy fix to edit the data in the file tough.

Yes, this may cause the strategy modifiers to get out whack when auto audjust option is on. Can you post an edit versionof the era stats file to correct this? I know I could do it myself but I am too lazy to test and tweak. Thanks!
