Questions on deadball era player ratings

I just updated from version 6 of the game, so many things in version 9 are new to me. When I imported players to set up a real historic league, I noticed that, like previous versions I played, all players before the 1920s have these characteristics -

1) All pitchers tend to have low/minimum stuff but very high movement and control.

2) All hitters have no power.

I'd like to see players who were average in these areas actually have average ratings. If you are playing with a 2-8 ability scale, and everyone is rated 2 or 3, that really doesn't tell you much.

So I guess my question is can this be changed through the new options in the game, or do I need a different database than the one that comes with the game?

Thanks in advance to anyone with words of advice for me.
