Huh? (Auto-assign draftees)

Been playing around with historical leagues now for a couple of days, and I CANNOT get this to work how I want.

Historical league, starting in 1871 - no draft, annual import of players (onto teams they played for) - No matter what I've tried, I've got one of four results.

1. Everyone goes to FA (good for something I want to do, but not in this particular league)
2. Everyone goes to draft.
3. Nobody appears in either FA, no draft - but players available if you look at "show all" players
4. Most players go to their clubs, however there are 10-12 who don't, and some clubs get 0 players.

Can someone explain exactly what setting I need to have checked/unchecked? Also, is there something I should do once the game has started (before playing any games?)

That's because the OOTP teams are not the same as the real teams, and the import is done before you can change the league structure. If you don't want a draft, you just have to assign the players manually the first year. It's part of the price we pay for 19th century historical leagues. Believe me, it's a lot easier than it used to be when there was no support at all.
