Looking for a new idea

I'm looking for a new idea for solo historical play. I prefer the modern era (1980-present). I've been playing in recent weeks as the Rays starting earlier this decade to see if I could guide a turnaround similar to the '08 Rays of real life. Anyone have some ideas? I was thinking of trying something like importing a past player(s) to the modern (ex. Babe Ruth) to see how their career would develop and impact the modern game. Thoughts?

Are your looking strictly for historical players only? One of my future "projects" is to have a 3rd Major League created (with fictional players), that competes with MLB for players. Eventually, the 2 leagues merge and you have an even larger MLB.

I haven't decided what era that I want to start with though. Was thinking about a merger of the United States League (1912) and the Federal League (1914-15) as a base for my 3rd league.

FYI, the top link in my sig is an online league that does something similar to what you were thinking about Ruth. We have legends that enter the league (2 a season) from years past. Just a nice little additiont o online league play.

another idea

here's what i did with each new version of OOTP:

1. go to baseballreference.com
2. hit the random button
3. the first team that comes up, that's yours

With OOTP 2007, I got randomized with the 1973 Astros. 2 90 loss seasons later, and it was time for OOTP9. This go-round, I was randomized with the 2002 Marlins. Fun team to play with
2002: missed the playoffs by one game
2003: best record in NL, lost first round of playoffs to the Reds
2004: missed the playoffs by two games
2005: up by 3 in the wild card with one month to go

I play out all my games, and have the computer GM handle all trades and signings.

My rotation in 2005:
Josh Beckett
Brad Penny
Dontrelle Willis
Josh Johnson
Scott Olsen

Lineup:
SS-H. Ramirez
2B-P. Ozuna
RF-Hermida
3B-Cabrera
1B-Olreud
LF-Dmitri Young/Sosa
CF-M. Cameron
C-D. Miller

will let you know how 2005 turns out.......

I am a Mets fan, so with my solo league I decided to go back to '62 and control them for every year going forward. Of course I am attempting to get to the big dance (WS) quicker then 69 but we shall see. I am doing things in a historical start, ahistorical seasons. So we shall see. Right now in '62 I am getting crushed but I am also setting up for the future.

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback. There's a couple great ideas there that I can run with - selecting a franchise randomly and/or somehow assigning great historical players to low finishers. Thanks again.

Quickstep, that's brilliant. As soon as I get fired from the mid-60s Cardinals, I'm trying it.

Hey quickstep.

I tried your method (because i also needed new ideas), and i was not exactly pleased with which team i got (1872 Cleveland Forest Citys). Im gonna have to try it out... thanks for the idea though.

thanks guys.

i finished 2 games out of the playoffs again in 2005! I've won at least 86 games every year, but have only made the playoffs once!

On to 2006, with these changes:
Y. Petit replacing Olsen in the rotation
rookie Dan Uggla replacing Ozuna at 2B
Reed Johnson/Luis Gonzalez replacing Dmitri Young
Both Bengie and Jose Molina at catcher

Lineup
SS-Ramirez
LF-Reed Johnson
RF-Hermida
3B-Cabrera
1B-Olerud
2B-Uggla
CF-Cameron
C-Name that Molina!

So far in 2006, I'm 7-3, so maybe, possibly, this is the year?!
