3 year recalc question

Hey I am a little confused about 3 year recalc. Let's say I am playing a historical league starting in 1984, and we get to say the 1988 year. I understand the recalc uses the 1987, 1988, and 1989 year. Would the stats involved in the recalc from 1987 be from real life or be the ones that occurred while playing the league?
