Online Leagues - What do you like/dislike?

Like:

Inaugural Drafts
Compelling storylines
Active messageboard
Lots of articles
Live sims

Dislike:

Restrictions on contracts to players
When teams other than myself make lots of trades
Leagues that don't do post-sim e-mails
Most, but not all, fictional leagues. #2, #3, #4, from likes, are really important for fictional leagues to work.
Predatory GMs

Neutral:

Salary caps

One of my main dislikes: Commissioners who won't make mid-sim changes for a team. For example, activating a player off of the DL, or following any other management instructions and requests that an owner might make. And this is just one aspect of something that, in my opinion, makes a league dysfunctional: that's when a Commissioner is too "hands off" and doesn't directly pilot his league along its course. In the worst case, a Commissioner can start a league, and then just let it run, without keeping close control over its organizations and outcomes.

A Commissioner needs to know what every owner is doing, at all times. He needs to know what's going on with every player on every team. He needs to know what's happening in every at-bat of every game. A league will go to seed if there aren't multiple sets of eyes watching its every corner. For a league to stay healthy in the long run, Commissioners must be ever-vigilant. Commishes must monitor statistical output every season, making sure that the league totals conform to the league's goals and guidelines. A Commish must watch over the personnel of every club, catching and correcting owners' mistakes. The Commissioner must be constantly modifying and improving his league's details, whether it's customizing the website, making new uniforms, or modding the league forum.

I've used the analogy many times: a league is a garden, which the Commissioner must constantly tend.

I've just recently realized how important that an inaugural draft is. Having an inaugural draft, or not, means the difference between having league parity, or not having it, for the first several seasons of a league's history.

I like these things too, but not all leagues have a lot of visible activity, and general public activity just isn't a part of some leagues' personality. Many leagues leave extraneous storylines and embellishments to the owners' individual imaginations.

Freedom in financial matters is good, but leagues must work to prevent abuse of the game's financial system. Leagues need to consider whether contact incentives should be allowed. If a league uses financials, the league Commissioner needs to run tests, and model the financial environment of upcoming seasons. The Commish also needs to watch all teams' financial activities and situations carefully. Everything from ticket prices to player contracts must be under constant scrutiny.

Post-sim emails are a must. Frequent, thorough communication is a key to league success.

I have the opposite opinion on this one. I have no use for real-player leagues, just as I have no use for real-world Major League Baseball.

Fictional league + teamnames
New GM ability to change logo (or even nickname if lame)
Active forums and a friendly atmosphere
No more than 1 week simmed at a time, 3 sims per week.
A system recognising that weaker teams need to have a chance to rebuild (priority draft picks and waiver claims). I think this helps keep people in a league.

One online league I'm in (EAB) has a promotion/relegation system which adds to the fun. I don't think this should be in every league but I'd like to see more leagues do it.

Dislikes:
Web sites that have broken links, missing images etc.
Weird site design. I just want to get to the forums and rules easily.

A Commish who is passionate about his league
Fictional with good story lines
Active owners
1 week sims
Simple rules

Dislikes:

Probation period for new owners - This one drives me - putting new owners on probation, not allowed to make trades for a certain amount of sims. I might be a new owner to the league but I'm an OOTP Online vet - I know how to manage a team and I know how to make good moves. I've won plenty of titles over the years. When I take over a team, I want to start putting my stamp on it right away

MLB Setup with 6 or 7 levels of minors

Owners who take more than 48 hours to respond to a PM - why did you join the league if you're not going to bother checking in on a regular basis? This is especially annoying when you're league is close to the trade deadline.

Points spending - I like incentives to a certain degree, and earning points for articles is good. It's how you can use the points afterwords. There are many things they can be used for, but they should NEVER be used to improve player skills

There's probably more, but those are the main ones for now.

-Not as easy to trade. I can never play in solo leagues because it's just too easy to get rid of bad contracts, or trade for young superstars. Even if I try to set up house rules, sometimes there is a fog of where the line of realism begins and ends. Where is the exact point that makes a trade good/bad? Should I penalize myself and never win a trade?

-Every team has it's own unique style. Some teams like veterans and some only want arb and under. Some value popular players and others don't. Some make good trade partners and others don't. Understanding what the owners are trying to do with their team gives them some personality.

-Fully customized leagues. I love browsing the online leagues just to check out the web sites, custom reports, teams, jerseys, ect. There are a lot of really creative people in this community. Although still waiting for the first league to ditch the passe forums in exchange for a sleek invite only social network that allows GM's to create their own team homepage easily

Dislikes
-GM's who take over the best possible team, brag that they are the best, quit the league when they ultimately run their team into the ground. Then join a new league with best possible team.... repeat as necessary

-GM's who offer you trades(in their best used car salesman voice) as if your as dumb as the AI. Then act surprised and frustrated when you reject, adamantly explaining to you how good of a deal it is when in reality it makes no sense and they basically want you to hand over the player(s).

-GM's who rip apart the constitution of a league trying to find any and all loop holes to gain the optimum advantage in showing off their strategy gaming prowess rather then just accepting the rules for what they are meant to be and showing good sportsmanship. After all, the commishes do enough work. They shouldn't have to write an 8 million page rulebook to cover every small detail of every possible situation.

-Participation Rewards. I've been in a league for one season and have already raised the market size by one and fan loyalty by 4 ....by doing things I would have done anyway. Meanwhile someone is probably cursing that they are forced to write articles that they don't care about just to keep up. Leagues need to be more definitive in their style. Have writing leagues and have non writing leagues. If it's a writing league then say if you don't write then you'll be replaced. If it's a non writing league then say if you want to write, knock yourself out, but nobody cares. Then cut out the participation bribes.

Lots of articles (Although mine are rarely good)
Live sims (Only in the playoffs)
Sim summary post in Forums
Fictional leagues
Commissioners who won't make mid-sim changes for a team.
Restrictions on contracts to players (never seen a game a couple of hundred gamers couldn't exploit)
Trading Like A Coked-Up Stock Broker (Won my 1st, and only, W.S. this way)
Win At All Cost attitudes (Only if they stay to fix the aftermath) OK maybe not-ALL could include many things I wouldn't enjoy
Beta testers

Dislikes
Inaugural Drafts
Leagues that do post-sim e-mails (Why-I'm on the boards most sims anyway) If the commish does not do a post sim summary in the forums then I am all for e-mails.
Redundent tasks that all fall on the commisioners- It's an avocation not a paid position
GM's who offer you trades(in their best used car salesman voice) as if your as dumb as the AI. Then act surprised and frustrated when you reject, adamantly explaining to you how good of a deal it is when in reality it makes no sense and they basically want you to hand over the player(s). (I dislike myself sometimes- I tend to be agressive in my offers and then review them and kick myself for the offering)

HA! Good one! I get that all the time from 2 or 3 GMs

A agree. Leagues with a crappy website suck, IMO. Not only should it be as eye pleasing as possible, but it should be intuitive and easy to navigate. After all, your frontpage is the first image and impression you have on any prospective GM. AND the GMs you have in your league take pride in being there when the website is something they can show to their non-OOTP friends.

I know that some leagues run well without a great website. The commissioner is extremely dedicated, on top of everything (although not to the extreme of knowing what goes on in every at-bat), never misses a sim, is always helping out, and generally has a forum that gets great traffic and the export % from GMs on a sim-by-sim basis is good. AND if you can do all that with a crappy website and you rarely have teams open... that's awesome. But I'm still bored if I am a GM in your league. Get a website. If you can't make one, find someone who will. Until then, your league is below average no matter how active everyone else is or how dedicated the commissioner is.

No doubt. Ditto on that note.

My likes:

- Fictional, historical, or real rosters... doesn't matter to me. I'm diverse in my taste with the subject.
- Leagues that get through the regular season in roughly 3 months.
- Online Utilities. StatsLab or Getch's OOTP:OU. Back in the day it was Catabase.
- League HTML Reports updated after each sim.
- Leagues that don't stop for the Ammy draft, but handle is starting opening day.
- Export Trackers
- Rules that have a proven track record of helping so that every team is somewhat competitive
- DL that are 14 days for leagues that run 7 or 14 day sims.
- Participation bonuses.
- Waiting lists that are never empty.
- Meeting GMs you met in an Online League to take in a RL baseball game.
- OOTP X

Dislikes:

- Websites that look like a 1st grader with a box of crayons.
- Personal attacks on league forums.
- Teams that trade away ALL their picks OR teams that horde 4 or more 1st round picks every ammy draft.
- Trading of draft picks more than 365 days in advance (allowing multiple years picks to be traded.)
- GMs that fear change.
- GMs that drop off the face of the earth and never return emails for longer than a week.
- Drafts that are longer than 2 rounds in a chat room/AOL IM.
- OOTP 6.5 (I don't run windows 3.1 anymore either)

Like:

*Fictional players (sometimes fictional cities/teams)
*Ability to make small modifications to players (a reward system for league activity at times)
*Renaming a draft pick
*Activity, whether it be in the forums, on the league's website, or even just roster submissions. Not everyone is a writer or cares to share their opinions in a forum.
*Some league parity-very hord to come by in some instances
*7-day sims, 3 times a week
*Nice website...doesn't have to be fancy, just functional
*Long-running leagues with a rich history
*First year player drafts

Dislike:
*Trading of draft picks, or more specifically, people who overvalue players and undervalue picks when trading for them
*Owners/GMs who go with the "win now at all costs" theory and then run out after they fail, leaving the team a mess
*Not getting answers from e mails or PMs to other owners
*Websites that seem "cluttered" with images, news stories, and links
*Real life players (although a historical "old timers" league would be interesting)
*Commishes who are unreliable about simming/updating files/communicating to the members of the league
*People who think I'm stupid enough to trade away a 5-star prospect for a couple of 35 year old aging veterans (that's just a personal jab at someone in one of my leagues )

Owners who don't say a word/never trade
Owners who spend $50m on a free agent
Commish's who don't think outside the realm of what OOTP does for you.
More than 28 teams
"Real" leagues. Don't mind real players but not being original enough to name the team something other than Boston Red Sox, bores me.
