Independent & unaffiliated leagues, draft & trade questions

Hi! Version 5 guy here -- have played it since it came out. I'm seriously considering the new version.

I love the idea of multiple leagues! I've gone through the forums and can't find these answers...
  1. If I have a Major League and an Independent League or Leagues, how does the calendar all deal with drafts and free agency, waivers, etc.? Is the Major League draft on the same day as the other leagues' drafts? Is the free agency period on the same days? Do all of the leagues get to draft and sign free agents from the same pool?
  2. If I have unaffiliated minors, how are those players chosen by a Major League team? Are they considered free agents? Or are they traded somehow?
  3. Am I able to run teams in multiple leagues as the GM? And again, are those clocks the same? In other words, it's July 7, and I play a game in the Majors in the afternoon. Can I then go to my Independent league team and make a trade or play a game that night on July 7?
  4. I habitually fleece the AI on trades in OOTP 5, always getting extra prospects from them in every trade. I need to be controlled! I want to make a few trades every year, and feel like the trades are fair, but I don't want to outright steal from the AI. For someone like me, what's the best trade setting? Normal, hard, very hard?
Thanks for your tips!

  1. If I have a Major League and an Independent League or Leagues, how does the calendar all deal with drafts and free agency, waivers, etc.? Separate drafts and waivers, same free agency pool. Is the Major League draft on the same day as the other leagues' drafts? Not necessarily; each league can be scheduled separately. Is the free agency period on the same days? No, can be different due to different league calendars. Do all of the leagues get to draft and sign free agents from the same pool? Yes.
  2. If I have unaffiliated minors, how are those players chosen by a Major League team? Minor league free agency. Are they considered free agents? If you set it that way, to allow them to leave their league as FA after a certain amount of years. Or are they traded somehow? That's possible too, again according to how you set up the leagues.
  3. Am I able to run teams in multiple leagues as the GM? Yes, either by taking temporary control as commissioner, or even better, having separate human manager identities that you would switch back and forth to do your managing before advancing the date. And again, are those clocks the same? The date is the same for all leagues in one game. In other words, it's July 7, and I play a game in the Majors in the afternoon. Can I then go to my Independent league team and make a trade or play a game that night on July 7? Hmmm. Yes, I think you can, because you can keep switching leagues and identities and either playing out or quick playing games, after doing your team maintenance but before advancing the date.
  4. I habitually fleece the AI on trades in OOTP 5, always getting extra prospects from them in every trade. I need to be controlled! No comment. I want to make a few trades every year, and feel like the trades are fair, but I don't want to outright steal from the AI. For someone like me, what's the best trade setting? Normal, hard, very hard? My advice is to start on normal, which I find to be difficult enough. However, you can always notch it up at any time.
Thanks for your tips! No problem. Others may follow with more. Enjoy.
Long live OOTP.

1998 Ya*%(#$ got it mostly right, but one small clairification: each independent league drafts from its own pool. There are no shared draft pools, no mutiple league drafting the same player, no drafted players refusing to sign and getting a big payday elsewhere. OOTP2007 is set up in a universe where, essentially, each draftee declares what league he's going to (or has it declared for him).

Just can't bring yourself to call me by my name, can you?

Only because you have turned me into some vile curse will I clarify your clarification. How does "each independent league drafts from its own pool" differ from "Separate drafts", eh?

I'm trying to see if I can make two leagues share a draft, even if it does mean creating a dummy division in one league for one day and shoving all the teams from the other league into it, and then unshoving at the end of the draft.

You can, but in the "options" screen when you click "play game" you have to disable the SION network...or else it will automatically sim the other games in the universe while you are playing out that one game.
