Lack of Position Rating
I have a guy in AAA who has good OF range (70), good OF error (73) and a very weak arm (2). However, he has no rating at any of the OF positions. He's played about 4 years in the minors and has played the field in each season. Is there a reason he doesn't get a rating for any OF position? What would happen if he played the OF? Would the lack of an OF rating decrease his range and error ratings when he plays an OF position? I've seen a few other players in other team's minor leagues with the same issue. The reason I ask, is this guy can hit, but I don't have a DH slot for him and I don't want to promote him unless I can use him as an occasional OF. Thanks,

This thread should tell you why your OF doesn't have any position rating. To make a very long story short, his arm rating isn't good enough, and unless it improves, he'll never get an OF rating.
2 out of 100 arm... that's pretty bad. So bad that I can't think of any comparable outfielders in the majors. Either those throws are all horribly off-line or they're getting there in two bounces or more. I'm not sure I'd want a guy like that in my outfield, unless he hit like Babe 3.0. That said, he might actually be an OK outfielder, despite the lack of an arm. Check the fielding stats. His range factor should be good, but he may have a pitiful number of assists. Then again, he might have a lot of assists - but with everybody and his grandma running on him; a stat, alas, that you won't see unless you play out the games and count 'em yourself. I'd switch him to 1B and play him in the outfield only in emergencies. |

The overall position rating is more of a cosmetic feature to give you a quick read on how good someone is at a position. As far as I know, the game does not use it to determine the outcome of a play in a game; instead it uses the range, error, arm and experience ratings. There are minimum ratings required in range, error, arm etc in order to get a position rating, and these minima increase as you move up the defensive spectrum.
Your OF surely has an arm too weak to get a rating, even at LF. He should still make a good LF (if your ratings are out of 100), although expect other teams to take extra bases on his arm. |
