Just a Heads Up

Never played OOTP X.X (any version). Total noobe. I have dial-up internet so didn't even try the download. Ordered the CD on the webstore and am anxiously awaiting its arrival. When it gets here, I hope you'll have a little patience with an old man, cause I'll probably be peppering the obvious brains on this forum with really, really, really, really, stupid questions. Sorry in advance .

OFG, no noob question is stupid. Noob questions are what this forum is for, so fire away! Just bear in mind that it may take some time to get answers, so you will need to be patient at times and wait until the obvious brains and other folks like me who just try hard can get back to you.

By the way, with dial-up access I won't bother recommending the online tutorials to you. You can hope that they include the manual with the CD that they are sending to you, but I would not count on that.

However, if you can see your way clear to tying up the phone for an hour or two, you would do well to download the manual and at least skim through that. It's 19.45 MB, so maybe you might want to download it late at night. Here's where to go: OOTP Manual

They mention on that page that you need Adobe Reader, and provide the link to the Adobe web site. Hopefully you already have that program. Unfortunately, Adobe Reader version 8 by itself (unselecting the other stuff that they offer with it) is another 22.3 MB download; version 7 is 20.3 MB and version 6, which I believe you could still use, is 15.9 MB.

The manual is tremendous, but so is this game. I strongly recommend that you get the manual, one way or the other.

If all of this seems like too much downloading, however, then you will have to rely on the in-game help (press the F1 key) which is context-related and very helpful when it is available. Unfortunately, through the second patch, it is not completed, not available everywhere in the game, and some links take you nowhere or to error pages.

Well, I guess I and a bunch of others will be talking to you. Good luck!

I try to pop in here when I remember to do so. No question is a bad question.

If you don't want to download the bloated Adobe Reader, the manual works just fine with Foxit Reader, which is a nice, tidy 1.5mb.

If I can help just holler. I seldom get into posting but have played OOTP from just about the start.

We have some very talented people here making everything from roster sets, logos, uniforms, etc. Be sure to check out the Mods section. The customization in this game is incredible.

Thanks guys. BTW, BEFORE I ordered it and paid for it, I e-mailed customer service and the assured me the CD would be the very latest version (2.02 if I'm looking correctly) AND would include the very latest manual but suggested I email (viatech???) I think it was, so as soon as I processed my credit card I fired away that email. I too, hope I get the latest manual.

Anyway, thanks again, I just hope you'll continue to be patient after I've asked questions that have already been answered a gazillioin times.
(I will do searches here as I've been perusing for some time before I finally ordered)

I'm new to this game too. I've been playing the demo for a couple of days now and loving it. One quick question. While playing a game there are little popup windows that appear off and on with what looks to be notes from scouts, sort of a tutorial. On my system they only appear for a second so I don't have time to read them fully. Is this a common problem?

If it's this kind of window, no, it's not a problem. In this year's version, they put a hints file in the game that displays whenever the program has to wait while something is loading. It's just entertainment rather than sitting and watching the progress bar move. As a matter of fact, it's a good sign that your computer is so fast that the messages go by too quickly for you to read. However, depending on what you do with the game and how long you play it, I think eventually you will have enough time to read all of the hints that come with the game.

Thanks for the reply. Now that you mention it, the screens do pop up when something is loading. I think it's between innings when I'm playing out a game. Good to know I'm not missing anything important. I need all the help I can get, I'm 4-8 starting out the season. My pitching has been killing me but a got a complete game shutout from my starter last game. This game is awesome.

OldFatGuy, be careful of the finish today button on the home page. If you're like me and like to play a lot of the games out rather than sim them do so before you go on to the next day. Otherwise, the game will be simmed for you. Hope you get your game soon.

FWIW, I used to download ~12 MB per hour over a piddlin' 31.2kbit line "back in the day". Maybe it's presumptious of me to think that OldFatGuy has a 56k connection, but if he does 71 MB shouldn't take much more than about 3 hours.

Yeah, I have a 56k modem, P-4, 2.5Gig system, but in downloading other things I have timed I am getting 1 meg between 4 and 5 minutes (closer to 5). I'm guessing you're actual speeds were a bit faster than 33K (possible) or my speeds are slower than 56K (more possible.) Anyway, I did the math and I'm thinking between 5 and 6 hours. And the bad part is I actually tried once a couple of weeks ago, went to sleep, and woke up to a message saying "Your ISP has disconnected you because of lack of activity." So, I had pretty much decided I wasn't going to sit in front of my computer and press a key every few minutes for 5 or 6 hours, BUT, today is Friday and still NO DISC. Aaaarrrrrggghhh! I may have to rethink sitting in front of my computer for 5 hours, I was really hoping to play this weekend.

I'm on dial up here too, still can't get high speed in my area yet. It took me around 6 hours to download. Some ISP's will disconnect after a certain time. Maybe you could give yours a call and see if that's the case for you. If so, they should be able to help you with that. Good luck.

Yeah, its not available here either. Everytime I see one of those Verizon (I'm on east coast in No. Va.) commercials for DSL for $14.95, I call and plead, beg, and each time I go through the motions and get the same answer, this service is not available in your area. And you know what, it's not gonna be now because they aren't running DSL lines anymore, they are running fiber optics now, for Verizons FIOS hi-speed service. I'm sure it will be blazingly fast, but I'm bettin it won't be $14.95 a month.
Anyway, guess I really have no choice but to wait for the disc. If it's not here in another week, I'll probably just have to give up.

As lame as it may sound, you could get a real cheap flash drive, which is useful anyway. Take it to the library and use their connection to DL it.

Off topic: I started out playing Baseball Mogul and I could swear that I've seen your name posting on that board before. Are you converting like me?

I'll tell you the truth, I went to the nearest library, (small town of Purcellville, this was also a couple of weeks ago), and they said I could download stuff but only if I bought their storage devices because of viruses, etc. Their storage devices were, (ready for this) 3 1/2 inch diskettes, you know the old 1.44 MB (???? memory might not be right on that). My son and his other half have high speed and he offered a few days ago because I did ask him to download a few other things for me (RL related), but I was like, no I'll have my disc in a couple of days now. Guess I should've taken him up on it.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I do want to get a flash drive. I don't even own one. It's a USB hook-up right?? Anyway, about how much do they run????
