New Game - Manager Questions

Ok, I start a new game in 1969 as the Pilots (thought that would be fun) and I'm still not experienced enough to know, but my first thought when I say my manager was "Man, I've got to lock this guy up, like forever." My second thought was "I hope this game doesn't give awesome managers to weak teams to 'aid' the player." (Assuming the 1969 expansion Pilots are weak).

So, am I right that this guy is one to hold onto? And, I hope I'm wrong in thinking it automatically gives the player a good manager. Would love to hear comments, so I can see if I am beginning to get a proper "feel" in judging things. Oh, BTW, I'm pretty sure all ratings are on a 1-20 scale, I didn't really change any of those, and I think that was the default.

Any comments appreciated.

I've noticed this happening in my games as well. You are set up with a good array of MLB staff, but your minor leagues not so good, and available staff even worse. Later on the game will manufacture some better personnel and some coaches will be, ahem, "freed from their contracts" right after the season. But for now, you want to hold onto these "gifts" by extending their contracts before the end of the season. All of them, because I see the they have blue and green numbers in their specialities (well, some of your scouts leave a bit to be desired). And no, I don't think that this array is linked in any way to the quality of your inaugural team.

EDIT: I could tell your ratings were 1-20 by the colors; I'm sure you know by now that yellow is average, green is good and blue is great, no matter what the scale.

Yeah, I noticed in the available personnel the highest rated ANY coach was IN ANY CATEGORY was 9. That reinforced my idea that I got a gem. If you're noticing it too I'm wondering if its just the player or all?? I'm gonna log off and check every single other team's staff. If the player gets this benefit at start-up, would be nice to turn it off. I know that sounds cocky from a total newbie, but I'm betting once I figure the mechanics to this one out I don't want any extra help. Usually its the AI that's too weak, at least that's been the case in every baseball sim I've ever played. Please, not bragging on my "intellect", far from it, just seems baseball AI is difficult to do and I haven't seen a game yet that's done it real well.

I can't speak with authority, but I don't think it's the way you are describing here. I think it's random, or it could be a factor of the number of teams in the new league; small number, more talent to go around. I just started a new 16-team league with full minors, checked for a less than stellar manager, found him with this team, assumed commissioner status and seized the GM job, and I am still saddled with this dullard:

Yeah, but I assigned myself Seattle during league creation, so I'm still wondering. I just went through and wrote down all ratings for all managers and I definitely got the best one. FWIW, I didn's "weight" the six ratings, as I just gave them all the same weight and added them all up. My guy's ratings added up to 110, the best in MLB. The league average was 84, so I my guy was about 30% better than the league average. But it could have been chance. I'm gonna go in this weekend and start 10 new leagues with 12 teams just for grins. 5 with me assigned already, and 5 with me unemployed. That way with the 5 where I'm assigned I can judge whether there is a pattern and I can compare to 5 new starts where I'm not assigned (thus presumably no team gets a "bonus" manager). I mean, I'm just wondering if the game is aiding the player or if I got lucky, and if it is aiding the player, is there some way I can turn it off. I didn't find too many difficulty settings, but I did adjust the ones I found.

I think you got very lucky with this guy (especially considering he's 35 and will improve with time- you'll have an amazing Manager for 30 years to come if you keep extending him). I've started fictional leagues with good and bad managers, and good and bad teams, in every possible combination. I've never had the impression that the game is trying to help me out by giving me better coaches than the other teams, and last time I started with a rubbish team, my coaches were also brutal. The Available Personnel, when you start a new league, is always full of guys who only should be coaching in the minors- you'll only start seeing decent coaches there after guys' contracts begin to run out in the first or second offseason.

Yep, I did my tests, and that's exactly what happened. I just got lucky with this guy. In my 10 other start games, not once did I have the "best" manager.
