Newbie tries to understand...

Ok.. maybe itīs a little weird question... but let me try to ask.. Hope you understand what i mean.

I have sometimes a little problem when i see the different ratings of my players... for example... i take Orlando Hernandez, Starting Pitcher of my Mets....

He has a Rating Pitcher from 99 (quite good) and his basic pitching ratings are all between 49 and 62 Points... not very good but aceptable... So.. id donīt understand his overall rating of 20... and with the same potential... ??

On the other hand there is John Maine... his rating as pitcher is 39.... not very good.. and his basic pitching ratings are between 48 and 69... a little bit better then Hernandez... So he has an overall rating from 62...???

So i thing Hernandez should go to my wastebucket or what? But why there is such a difference... i donīt understand.... is this the effect of his age?!? Please help me...

Are you able to upload screen prints like this one, of the two pitchers? That would help to be able to look at them to see what you are talking about. For example, when you say "Rating Pitcher from 99" and "his rating as pitcher is 39," are you looking at that number in the middle of the screen, under Defensive Ratings? The one that says "Rating at Pitcher"? This means his rating as a fielder in the pitcher position, a rather small component of a pitcher's overall rating if it counts at all.

Yes, good. I can confirm one thing; what I said before about those Ratings at Pitcher, those are their defensive ratings.

These being real players, I surmise that you are using real rosters that somebody made and you downloaded. The 'MLB07" indicates that you are using Cubby's roster set, no? If so, I need to defer to somebody who is more knowledgeable on how this roster set rates these real players. It is not the same as for somebody like me who games with fictional players.

Let's see if somebody else comes along with more experience with real current and historical rosters and how those players are rated.

Ok, I will add some speculation. El Duque is 41 here. Combined with mediocre (all yellow) numbers in pitching ratings, and a not so great endurance rating as a starter, the game may be rating him poorly (20 is the lowest on the 20-80 overall/potential scale) because it sees him retiring soon. Maine is another story, much younger, better endurance, and one good to excellent pitching rating number (green). That's the best that I can do.

And another thing. Look at Hernandez's stats the last two years: ERA of 5.12 and 6.11 (granted, he's at 3.29 this year), while Maine just turned in a 3.60 performance. Many things apparently go into the rating system, including perhaps recent statistics, and I don't know how much influence roster makers like Cubby have over ratings or whether the game is doing it the same way as if they were fictional. In this case, though, I would be looking to nudge El Duque into retirement after 2007. That would be my reaction if these were Bill Smith and Fred Jones that I was looking at in my game.

FWIW, I tend to focus much more on the "Basic Pitching" ratings and current stats much more than the overall rating. The main thing I look at in terms of overall rating is the potential, and then mostly when dealing with youngsters and other unknown quantities. Bear in mind that some players will consistently play above or below their potential and ratings - the unpredictability really adds some depth to OOTP.

And this can be my fault at the moment... when i see a Player with medium ratings but an Overall of 20... i think he is not good to play... i think i have to change this...

You and ej are on the right track, because it looks like he's giving a good performance in the current season. I would "ride that nag (horse) until he drops," meaning if he tails off in 2007 and starts out 2008 poorly, then I would release him. No Tom Glavine multi-year senior citizen contracts for him for sure, though!
