Arbitration results?

Hei!

Is there a chance to say "no" to the result of arbitration in the game? Meaning the player would become a free agent if Im not happy with the result?

Or do I have to decide earlier if I want to enter arbitration and accept the result no matter if I like it or not?

Arbitration is binding- you have to accept the result, and pay the salary (or trade the guy!). If you don't want to go to arbitration with a player, release him during the offseason, before the arbitration hearings. Then he'll become a free agent, and you'll owe him nothing.

Thanks a lot!

Im very unsure about my Nr 4 / 5 starter ... Kind of hard to release him as I don't know if I get a good other starter on the Free Agent market ...
AAA doesn't seem to offer a quality starter yet ...

One thing to keep in mind is that the AI that decides what the arbitration award should be is the same AI that runs the other teams in your league (unless you're playing online). So I think you're unlikely to get hurt by going to arbitration with a 4th/5th starter: you should be able to trade and/or dispose of him on waivers. The exception, I guess, would be if you're up against the salary cap and that guy's arb award could keep you from signing a free agent you want.

I usually don't just release the player unless he REALLY sucks and no one would want him. If he is just not worth what his arbitration award is I will try to trade him after the award. At least this way I get something for him. Usually use these guys to get a decent to good reliever, sometime the AI will trade me a good prospect for the guy. I guess to put it in a quick statement is that I don't want to lose a player without getting something for him.

A player cannot have his salary cut by more than 20% through arbitration, so if a guy has taken a talent hit, and was already making good money, the only way you might be able to get rid of him is to release him before arbitration. With trading set to hard or very hard, it isn't always possible to trade away fifth starter types, especially if they're making much more than the minimum. Otherwise, of course, I agree with the above- better to get something than to get nothing.

Well we are talking about Magic Claudio Vargas here.

He was awful in the beginning of the season, but since august he gave me some solid performances

<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td class="slg">2007 Milwaukee - MLB</td> <td class="srg">28</td> <td class="srg">25</td> <td class="srg">18</td> <td class="srg">5</td> <td class="srg">9</td> <td class="srg">0</td> <td class="srg">5.14</td> <td class="srg">126.0</td> <td class="srg">134</td> <td class="srg">86</td> <td class="srg">72</td> <td class="srg">26</td> <td class="srg">47</td> <td class="srg">96</td> <td class="srg">0</td> <td class="srg">0</td> <td class="srg">1.44</td> <td class="srg">.293</td> <td class="srg">5.1</td></tr></tbody></table>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr> <td class="sl">August</td> <td class="sr">5</td> <td class="sr">5</td> <td class="sr">0</td> <td class="sr">2</td> <td class="sr">0</td> <td class="sr">4.35</td> <td class="sr">31.0</td> <td class="sr">28</td> <td class="sr">17</td> <td class="sr">15</td> <td class="sr">5</td> <td class="sr">12</td> <td class="sr">30</td> <td class="sr"> </td></tr> <tr> <td class="slg">September</td> <td class="srg">1</td> <td class="srg">1</td> <td class="srg">0</td> <td class="srg">0</td> <td class="srg">0</td> <td class="srg">3.52</td> <td class="srg">7.2</td> <td class="srg">8</td> <td class="srg">3</td> <td class="srg">3</td> <td class="srg">1</td> <td class="srg">2</td> <td class="srg">2</td></tr></tbody></table>
What comes first? Arbitration or free agent signing?
I mean if I get a good starter from the free agent market, I could release Vargas easily ...

Arbitration comes first. The AI will probably care a lot more about Vargas's ratings than about his performance. You can always try shopping him around to see if any AI teams are interested before you make any decisions about arbitration. If none are interested, you might then consider releasing him.

Good idea as Vargas is making 2.500.000 per year.

Im a bit worried when Braun (121 G, 484 AB, .343, .626, 32 HR, 97 RBI) and Fielder (142 G, 531 AB, .328, .685, 48 HR, 141 RBI) come to arbitration. If they earn very much, I can bury my hopes of getting a Nr 1/2 starter through free agency.

It will probably depend on how you've set your salaries in Game Setup, but I don't think I've ever seen an arbitration award higher than about $8m or 9m per year. Even superstars normally get between $6m and $9m- much less than they would get in free agency, and normally much less than they request if you offer them an extension. Vargas is, of course, guaranteed to get at least $2m, since his salary can't be cut more than 20%; if no team wants him when you shop him around, and you don't need him, I'd definitely consider releasing him.
