Talent & Rule 5 draft

I have a question about Talent. How set in stone are the rating? Is it possible for a player to exceed his talent rating?

My next question is about the Rule 5 Draft. If a team has a terrible farm system.. could they just remove most of there secondary rooster.. so they could get more picks during the draft? Is that the idea behind the rule 5 draft?

Not very, they do change every now and then, and yes.

I think the rule 5 draft in game is only 2 or 3 rounds, regardless of how empty your roster is, and all rule 5 draftees must go on the active roster, so it can't be used to build up a farm system.

Potential ratings can change a lot, more often negatively than positively. Because these changes are largely random, it's very difficult to guess which guys will exceed their current Potential, and which prospects will flame out.

As for the Rule 5, it can go on for as many rounds as you want; it's not limited to 2 or 3 rounds, as Zekester suggests above. As Zekester points out, you must keep all Rule 5 picks on your 25-man roster for most of the season (the game will let you demote them near the end of July, actually), and because most players available in the Rule 5 aren't very good, it would be difficult to keep many Rule 5 guys unless you really didn't care how well your team performed. One exception- if a Rule 5 guy is injured, you could keep him on the 60-day DL for the whole season, then demote him when the year is up.

You also probably wouldn't want to clear out most of your 40-man roster before the Rule 5, because then most of the players you clear off the roster will be available to other teams in the Rule 5, so you might lose some good guys.

Ahh. I see what you guys mean now. Thanks for the clarification.

I was wondering..cause if my team sucks. What to stop mean from dropping everyone and stealing the prospects from other teams that aren't on their 40 man roster.

But if what you guy said is true and there aren't many good players in a Rule 5, then i guess its not worth it.

there wouldn't likely be very good prospects available since being rule 5-eligible would essentially mean that it has taken them a long time to develop and that they still aren't ready. And even if you picked up a guy with decent potential, as others have said, he would need to be placed on the active 25-man roster... which he may not be ready for.

And yeah, generally the rule 5 draft doesn't have many decent-good players but it's always worth a look -- i've picked up some decent guys over the years.
