2 questions

This forum has been great in learning the game. Thanks for all of your questions and answers.

1. What does pre-season(starts in Feb.) do for my team, and is there anything I should do to help my team be ready for it?
2. I signed a Free Agent in the offseason, and afterwards, I was informed that I had to give the team that the player came from a first round pick. Is there anyway to know ahead of time if a free agent will require compensation?

Thanks in advance for your help.

1- I think that's when the season changes over- if you check the standings page, say, before the Preseason starts, you'll see last year's standings; after Preseason starts, all records will be reset to 0-0, all stats to 0s. Nothing particularly important to pay attention to as a GM at this point though.

2- If you open a Free Agent's profile, click on the 'Contract + Status' tab, and scroll down, you'll see whether he is a 'Type A' (1st round pick as comp), 'Type B' (2nd round pick as comp) or 'No Compensation' free agent, in the bottom right.

Note that if you finished in the bottom half of the standings, you can sign Type A free agents all you want, and you won't lose any draft picks, even though you'll get news messages saying that you will. The first half of the first round is always exempt from compensation.
