Modifying Fan Reaction

Is there any way to tinker with the fan reaction? It's very frustrating getting letters detailing how the fans are just devastated that I traded away Corky Miller or Chad Paronto. Why does trading scrubs even affect the fan interest level, unless the scrub is a long time team member? How much of a difference does fan interest actually make?

If you make yourself commissioner in Manager Options, you can then go to your team's Home Page and click Options & Ballpark. There you will find a bunch of things that you can tinker with, among them Fan Interest and Fan Interest Modifier.

The latter is the factor that results from your latest roster moves; positive is good and negative is bad. You can also just change Fan Interest itself if you want. Eventually, IIRC, the modifier moves to zero as its effect gets absorbed in the base number.

Fan interest is important as it affects attendance and merchandising revenue. Fan loyalty is also important; it keeps interest and attendance from falling way off when your team does not do well.

The fan reaction has to do with the player popularity. The easiest way to deal with this is to edit the individual player popularity before a trade. Downgrade any player that is "popular" or "very popular" before a trade is processed.

I think this aspect of the game needs a lot of fixing. No matter how popular a player is, if he's getting minimal playing time or he's not performing well in recent years, the fans will not be devastated by his leaving. Certainly no backup player should ever warrant a fan interest crash.

I fix this in my head by imagining that he's very popular from appearing on local talk shows, or from a budding acting career, or because he's close friends with Jessica Simpson or somebody.

Thanks for all the responses. I had hoped that there might be a slider scale for "fan responsiveness to transactions," or some such modifier, but I guess not. I think you really have to gut a team (a la the 1998 Marlins) to kill fan interest in a team by transactions.
