Players becoming coaches/managers

So I've noticed whenever a player has a career ending injury the owner makes a comment about keeping him in the organization somehow, perhaps as a coach or manager. Is this just feel good lip service or will retired players show up in the available personnel list after a while?

Some do. I'm not sure what the exact ratio is or how it is determined. Mostly its inaccurate. For instance a career outfielder could be made into a pitching coach. It should be improved because coaches is a neat feature.
