Relationship between waivers and DFA?

Ok, I bought this game a week ago because I was a Baseball Mogul player who was looking for more depth than what was provided in that game. However, after spending days combing through the manual (what other game requires you to study a 500 page manual before playing?) and checking the boards here I still have not even got past day 1 of a standard Major League sim. I started with the Red Sox and they start off with five players on waivers with those same players being on the DFA list. However, four of those players have no time left on the DFA list even though they have three days left on waivers. What am I supposed to do with these guys? My understanding is that I can't do anything with them until they clear waivers and yet they can't remain on the DFA list any longer.

Attempting realism is nice but after a week with this game and being able to do nothing with it except study a huge manual is a bit frustrating. I've been playing baseball sims for over 30 years and I'm lost. How do you guys expect a casual fan to be able to pick up this game and start playing?

By reading the manual, Dyzalot. This game requires study in order to get the full benefit of playing. It's not for the faint of heart.

That said, the good news is that the manual need not be read cover to cover. I would focus only on the chapters that are needed to play at the beginner level, then go back and read what you missed once you feel more comfortable.

Also, there are tutorials available on the main web site, F1 help is available on almost every screen, and much can be learned right here by scanning and searching for the topic of current interest. We all started out in your situation, and we all learned in one fashion or another.

I cannot say how many of us sat down to read the manual from start to finish before playing, but I would guess very few. However, I can tell you that once I got into the game I read it entirely, twice, and my understanding and enjoyment were greatly enhanced. The manual is a great resource.

So I've read the manual. I've done the tutorials. I've searched and posted here and yet I still can't progress past day one. You don't see a fundamental problem with this?

I don't think I've ever read the manual, but then OOTP was simpler back when I started playing with OOTP4.

You can always go into Commish mode (somewhere under your Manager options tab), then go to your league setup, de-activate waivers, move the players wherever, then turn waivers back on. Or keep waivers off. I generally don't play with waivers on, simply because I feel the AI doesn't work great with them.

Dyzalot, obviously, no one expects you to have to read the whole 500-page manual before you can play. I just tried creating a league as manager of the Red Sox, and I see the problem you're experiencing.

Here's a way around the problem:

1. Create a new major league game
2. When the creation process starts, DON'T create a new manager. Go straight to the Game menu (the baseball), and select Auto-Play Today.
3. Go to the Manager menu and select Add/Edit Human Manager.
4. Click Add Another Manager, enter your information, select the Boston Red Sox, and click OK.
5. Go to the Manager menu and select "Select Human Manager" and choose the new manager you just created.
6. Go to MLB Teams menu, and select the Red Sox.
7. Click on the Transactions tab, and then the Waivers & DFA option.

You'll see that only JC Romero is currently designated for assignment, and he has 2 days until he clears waivers.

I hope this helps!

Please understand that this is a workaround, and you've come across a problem that no one else has reported. We're sorry for the inconvenience! But, that should get you moving forward!

Hi Dyzalot,
I've had this problem too this thread helped me a little. It basically advises you to play around with your roster and release players.

I tried releasing players, but the players on the DFA list were all popular players and when i released them, the fan interest went down dramatically. I checked my roster and most of my players are popular - is this right? Surely releasing some marginal youngsters shouldn't make fan popularity drop so drastically.

I think your problem is a bug - obviously not encountered by alot of people as battist didn't know owt about it. Thanks for the work around battist - will this be fixed for version 9? It seems its quite an important one as it prevents players from actually getting past day 1!

Dyzalot,

You've probably already solved this issue with the help of others since this thread hasn't been active for a while, but I just wanted to comment that the problem you had is extremely common (I would imagine), and thus not a bug.

I also just switched from Baseball Mogul recently and encountered the exact same problem with the Pirates. They have about 5 guys DFA that have to be dealt with who still have 3 days of Waiver time left. Before I understood how the whole system worked I played around and couldn't find a way to get everything set up without releasing the players (2 of whom were big league starters)--so this was a bit annoying.

However, after playing through a full season and learning more about roster management, I went back and was able to find a simple solution to this problem. The info in the link that Drazi10 left is how I went about this problem also, although I figured it out independently.

What you need to do is waive and DFA a number of players on your 40-man roster that don't belong on there. It wasn't hard to find about a dozen on the Pirates roster (it might be more difficult with the Sox). In any case, once you take these guys off the 40-man, and make room on the big league active roster, you can just bring the guys who were DFA with waiver time in the beginning and put them on the major league roster and everything should be fine.

The only risk you run is losing some of the guys you moved off of your 40-man roster, but if you choose crappy players even that is unlikely and you should be able to do all of this without losing anyone.

Admittedly, I don't understand why the game would begin with good players DFA in the first place, and it's certainly tricky for beginners to figure out how to solve this. But, since it happened with both the Pirates and the BoSox, I assume it is this way with just about any team you start off with and thus is not a bug, just a nuisance.

Once you get this issue resolved, I think you should really like the game compared to BM. It has every single thing that the people on the BM forums complain about BM not having and I've really enjoyed playing it thus far.

Hopefully this will help other newbies who encounter this problem in the future.
