I'm Just the Manager; Why Doesn't GM GM?

I'm set up on Manager Options to control lineups only. My GM ("computer AI") controls all the rest.

Stan Hack went down for two weeks with an injury. I (maybe this was my mistake? I did GM's job for him) put Hack on the 15-day disabled list.

I would assume that the GM would automatically fill that slot for me on my Major League roster, but he's not doing anything. It's several days later. Why doesn't the GM fill the slot with a minor leaguer or do something? After all, he's supposed to be controlling "transactions" and such ....

Please help me understand this. I'm trying to find a way to play the game that works for me.

I apologize for bumping, but I'm still lost on this issue.

My roster shows 24/25 slots in use. With "Manager Options" set for the AI to control all activities but the "lineups, rotations," I would have expected the AI to take care of filling that slot. Am I mistaken?

I'd like to play like real-life Managers actually function in many situations ... making the on-the-field decisions, but having to play the cards I am dealt by the GM.

Never played that way before.

There are 7 team control setting on the manager options page, you're saying you've set all of them except the top one (lineups/depth/pitching staff) to AI and he's not doing anything?

This is the way I always play, and I've never had this problem. Are you sure you don't have the "Never Allow AI Moves" or whatever it is (I'm at work) checked? I think it's under the Team Options page.

I just set it up like that.
Then I injured a guy.
He moved the guy to the DL and brought someone up.
Then I injured a guy and moved him to the DL myself.
Simmed the day and he did nothing, but it was an off day.
Simmed another day and he promoted someone in his spot.
Injured another guy and moved him to the DL myself.
Simmed the day and he promoted someone.
Injured another guy and moved him to the DL myself.
Went in and manually played the days game.
Finished the day and he promoted someone.
Went in and played a game manually.
Came out, injured another guy and moved him to the DL myself.
Finished the day and he promoted 2 someones.

Looks like he won't promote someone if he doesn't need to, but he's doing it all for me. Make sure you're only set to control that top option and the rest are set to the AI guy or minor league managers.

The mystery deepens.....

I do NOT have AI actions disabled. My GM has been making trades.

I went to Manager Options, and took myself off of Lineups, too. So I am "Manager" but doing nothing for the team. Not only does the AI not fill the 25th spot on my roster, but if I start a game, it puts no one at third base and tells me I need to put someone at third base before I play the game.

So then I went on "vacation." Even on vacation, the same thing happens.

All right. This may be an odd question, but do you HAVE a GM?

That's an interesting question. Do I?

There is a guy named Lutz listed as "Computer AI" for my team.

I assumed that the game automatically has a GM for my team, and that this team got a guy named Lutz.

Are you suggesting that I have to create a GM?

The "guy" listed, other than Minor League Managers, is your manager, not your GM. Go to your personnel page; see if the GM slot has a name in it.

A-ha. I am an idiot.

I am the General Manager.

I thought I was the Manager. Lutz is the manager. So... I guess when I told him to manage roster movement and DL, his response was "but you're the GM, I can't do that."

I get it ... it's primarily a GM-oriented game, so it defaults to making you a GM! I am brilliant.

But what if I want to play OOTP as a Manager at the Major League level? How would I do that? Lets' say I just wanna fill out the lineup cards, set rotations, manage games. In the Historic league that I created, I see only the option to GM at the Major League level or Manage at the minor league level?

Off the top of my head I would think you could set the team to AI control in commissioner mode, then take control of your team to manage them each game. You'd have to set your line-up each day, but that's more realistic anyways cause they have to write it down before each game too. Right? I don't know if there's a way to do it other than that.

How exactly would I 'take control' of the team to manage them? What would you recommend precisely to set this up? And will I be the "manager of record" by doing this .... will the game keep statistics on my performance, and will the GM evaluate me? Will I be able to set 7-day lineups if I want?

It should work the way you want. It puts you in as the GM, but you assign the duties down to your manager. That's the way I tested it, and it worked fine for me.

So you go to your manager options, under the team control setting there are 6 drop downs that default to your name. If you hit one of them, it comes up where you can choose your name or the AI (in your case Lutz). The top option, setting lineups/depth/pitching you should have your name. In all others it should be the AI (Lutz in your case).

<a href="http://s288.photobucket.com/albums/ll183/tysokkind/?action=view&current=manager.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll183/tysokkind/manager.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I'm guessing you checked this but... possibly the prevent AI changes has been checked somewhere. Hit the check box for commissioner mode, go to you team's home page, hit the tab for options and ballpark... half way down the left side says Roster AI, prevent any AI roster changes with a check box. Make sure that's off. Then go to each of your minor league teams and make sure that box isn't checked.

Thanks Tysok. Made all those settings adjustments.

My original problem was that the AI/GM was not putting a 25th player on my roster.

Once I exited Commissioner Mode in this game, he brought up a kid from AAA to fill the spot.

Yay! Thanks again.
