Is it better for multi year contract or automatic renewal

What is the difference between the two?

Multi-year is a contract you have negotiated with the player.

Automatic renewal is assigned by the game and is the league minimum. Automatic renewal occurs each year after the rookie year until arbitration.

Seeing as the automatic renewal is the league minimum it is the least expensive. If you have to negotiate, the player is going to ask for more than the minimum.

Oh OK because I went in Editor Mode and Manually assigned 5 year contracts at $390,000. Maybe I will switch them over to automatic renewals. At what point will they ask for more money?

It depends on your settings for arbitration and free agency.

After your edited five year contract is up, if they are still in the period before arbitration, they they will be automatically renewed. Since you edited the contract I don't know if this will be at this rate or the league minimum.

If the edited five year contract is up after the arbitration period but before free agency, they will fall into arbitration.

If the edited five year contract is up after the free agency period, they will not ask for more money but just become free agents.

Actually when I went to my Player Salary Screen I saw where at the end of the contract where I edited them that they automatically assigned a new contract based on the player's ability so I guess I will pay up the nose when those league minimum contracts are done.

Can someone confirm that I understand this automatic renewal correctly?

If the players contract status says 'automatic renewal', there is no way I can lose the guy?

Is that correct?
