Fielding ratings

I was wondering if anyone has noticed that it isn't a big deal to play guys out of position? Once in awhile I will put my 1st baseman at third or let him catch just to experiment, and he doesn't seem to make any errors.

This is a small gripe about a great game, but I'd like to see it hurt more to be out of position. You shouldn't be able to get away with having your left fielder play 2nd.

Any agreement out there or am I just getting lucky w/ the lack of errors??

I'd say you're getting lucky with a small sample size. Stick a left fielder at shortstop and sim a full season to see what can happen.

IMHO, it seems clear that OOTP is designed so that any player can play any position for a few innings without a major problem. I suspect that is because the AI often ends up creating fielding assignment problems toward the end of a game. If an OF couldn't function as a catcher, for example, the game would break down from time to time. This is not a good thing, but may be expedient, at least until the causes of these fielding assignment problems can be fixed.

OTOH, Kelric is correct about the long-term. I tried this myself: playing everyone on a team out of position for a season. The results were pretty grotesque.

Just now, my opponent's starting shortstop got hurt. Next inning, at his first chance at shortstop, their rightfielder makes an error allowing my #2 hitter to get on. Then a wild pitch, so he is now on second. A couple of pitches later, Adam Dunn hits a homerun for me. Scoreboard!

Edit - Of course, my Nats pitchers would blow a 5-1 lead, only to tie it at 6 all in the bottom of the 9th before Ronnie Belliard hits a walk-off grand slam. Sweet.

I have noticed that it is more about fielding skills than positon, in my 1910 game my second basemen has no ability to play any position but he has good range and desenct error, in half a season he has played well, not all star level or anything but he has fewer errors that others that have better ratings at thier position.

I have played about 70 games so far and he has started most, has not learned anything but has not looked bad ever
