Waive Vs. Release Vs. Other

I have a high-paid player on my team that has a contract for three more seasons. I can't trade him away because no one wants him (neither do I). So I guess I want to just get rid of him. So how do I get rid of the guy?

I did some searching and found some stuff that went all around what I want to know but nothing exactly on point.

If I "release" him, a message comes up that says this will add a zillion dollars to my player expenses. I barely have any player expenses that I can spare. What is that all about???

If I "waive" him, a message comes up that askes if I want to place him on "irrevocable waivers" which sounds like what I want...maybe?

How do I get rid of a player I simply do not want. There will be more players that I want to get rid of too.

You can place him on waivers, but if no one is taking him in trade, it may be unlikley they will claim him off the waiver wire either. You might revisit the trades with an eye toward taking some of the other team's salary weight off of their budget to make him a bit more attractive. Is he older? Are his stats reasonable? Are your AI Evaluation settings left at default?

Player salaries are guaranteed. If you release him and there's 50 million left on his contract, you will have to pay him. A player like that is likely to clear through waivers. You can send him down or release him. Either way, you're going to have to pay the man if no one will trade for him.

Thanks.

I didn't ever realize baseball contracts were "guaranteed."

I'm used to football where if you release someone, their annual salary need not be paid.

Note to self: rethink those outstanding multi-year contract offers immediately.

I ran the sim for a few seasons and then took the team that performed the weakest. They don't have many good players as you might guess. They're paying one single player a ton of money and they don't have much of a budget for other players.

But, yes, he's an older guy.

I'll try that trade thing again and see if I can pick up some more salary from the other team. Maybe I can get two players that can help me or something like that.

Thanks.

Baseball money is guaranteed, as mentioned. All the costs are upfront when a man is cut and a big enough hit can probably leave you really hurting for a few seasons if revenue sharing isn't turned on (Game menu > Game Setup > League Setup > Rules). For some historical research, check out Albert Belle's contract with the Orioles. Your one saving grace can come if a player retires, in which case you aren't on the hook for any of his money.

sorry for jumping on your thread, but, I was wondering, when offering players for trades, does the AI GMs look more at stats or attributes?
How about age, potential ratings, salary, injury ratings/history, lefty bats, and team position needs, etc.?
Can I just assume the game's similar to real life?
For that matter, does the AI build their lineups more based on stats or attributes?

thank you

No problem from me about jumping on my thread. I'd be interested in knowing that too.

There is an AI Evaluation setting under game set up/AI options. That's one level. I'm quite sure that contract and team needs do also form part of the trading AI.
