Player, How Long Do I Own Thee?
I'm just trying to get all this clear in my head. I can't find a single chart or anything that explains it. So I'm taking bits and pieces from a thread here, a wiki there, a piece, and so forth.
Forgive me if any of this seems lame or is incorrect or is incomplete. My understanding: FIRST THREE SEASONS after draft: After I draft a player, I basically can do as I wish with him for three years? So I can keep him in the minors at any level for this three year period...or if he's good, I can move him to my 25/40 man rosters. It seems like I practically own a player for his first three seasons. AFTER THREE YEARS from draft: Player MUST be placed on the 40 man roster or he becomes eligible for Rule 5 draft? What happens if no one takes him in the Rule 5 Draft and I don't want him on my 40-man roster? Can I still do what I want with him? Does he become a free agent? Is he eligible for the Rule 5 Draft every year...or just once? YEARS FOUR THROUGH SIX: Three option years here...I think this means I can move any players on my 40-man roster freely between my 25-Man roster and any of my MINOR franchises. It seems that the Game/Sim indicates how many option years are remaining. YEARS SEVEN PLUS: Those playing for more than six years and not under contract are free agents. Does this six years include any combination of time in the minors or majors or must it be only major league time? |

I could have sworn I had posted here. Anyways, assuming I remember all the rules...
You draft a player. You now control him for six seasons in the minor leagues. After three of those, if he isn't on the 40-man roster, he is eligible for the Rule V draft. If he is not drafted, he can stay off the 40-man for another year. He is eligible for years four through six for the Rule V draft. As far as I can recall, you've got the option years right. Once a player is out of options, he would have to pass through waivers to go to the minors (if you have waivers turned on). Any combination of six years for free agency.
