Waivers
This is sort of a newbie question, so I thought I'd put it here. Is it common that guys with high talent/potential to be put on waivers just for the hell of it? I noticed one guy has a minor league contract with a 70 potential on the 20-80 scale. Obviously I want to pick him up for my team, but I don't want to beat the game unfairly because of a flawed AI. What's your guys opinion of this?

The AI waiver logic is flawed. I never bother turning it on anymore.

Even this I question because I was able to trade Tim Wakefield, John Raynor, Zach Daeges, and $1 mil in cash for John Maine, Fernando Martinez, and Zach Lutz. Wakefield is probably in his last season and the other 2 prospects I gave up are low level prospects. Although Maine was on the trade block, he's still a 27 year old #3-4 pitcher who's pretty solid. Martinez is a top prospect and Lutz is a mid range prospect who's arguably still better than anything I gave up. The Mets said "Great trade, do it right away" too. I have the trade difficulty on hard and set it so the AI doesn't make many trades.

Did you offer the trade, or did the AI offer it to you? The AI is much weaker when the player offers the trade or negotiates upon an existing offer.

I offered it since Maine was on the block and they wanted to ditch him. Between waivers and trades, the engine is extremely flawed. This is with me using tougher settings too. It's just ridiculous how easy it is to hoard prospects.

A lot of us play with basic house rules. For example, I keep waivers off. I never offer a trade to the AI, nor do I negotiate a trade when they make me an offer. I either take their offer straight up or not at all.
Sometimes if I'm desperate to move a player I'll use the Shop Around feature and make a one for one trade, but even then the AI will sometimes include prospects I don't think they should move. In those cases I just won't take 'em.

One option I have fun with in Single Player mode is to run one team, get it in good shape and then switch to the worst team in the league and continue doing this. Sometimes, even with the flawed AI, it can be quite a challenge because of the random nature of the way prospects develop and the timing of the injury bug - I've had all of my good players wiped out by injuries right before the playoffs start on some championship-calibre teams.
