Extemely unpredictable stats and longterm ratings

Just a few observations that I noticed if anyone wants to comment on this...
  • Pitchers are extremely unpredictable. I can sign a 4-5 star free agent pitcher who performs well after a year or two then goes south.
  • Rating potentials will all to often disappear to nothing after a year or two of showing superstar potential.
The statistics are hard to figure out. No matter whom I sign they usually tend to do worse for my team then they ever had performed. A picture with a lifetime ERA of 3 will probably average 4.50 for my team as a rule. Home run hitters perform much less also and averages too. These players are in their prime and are not aging veterens.

I also noticed that I have an unusual amount of prospects that turn into one star players in their prime and never amount to much.

Here are some of the things I am looking at as explanations:
  • I thought at first there might be a difficulty setting that I might have had on hard, etc. but there does not seem to be one except for Trade AI.
  • My coaches are all top-notch as is my scout
  • Injuries? Most players are injured but possibly they take a ratings hit after an injury that I am not catching?
  • For prospects perhaps I am not keeping them down in the Minors long enough? I do pull them up when they have 1-2 stars and let them play. The minor league report does not say they are ready yet but I still call them up to give them time.
Anyway using the 2008 rosters I have seen Red Sox players Bucholz, Lester, Ellsbury all turn into failures, free agents Sabathia, Brandon Webb, etc all have ERA's of 5-6 for several years running.

Not whining as I really enjoy this and the unpredicitability at times but just trying to get a handle on this unpredictability.
Thanks,

When signing free agents, it is a bit hit and miss, you shouldn't always have them performing worse though, you could just be getting players getting out of their prime though.

with talent changes though, thats pretty much all part of the game, you do seem to be a bit unlucky that a lot of your players have taken hits, but that can happen-

i remember signing Prince Fielder to a 6 year 130 million contract, he got injured for 7 months 4 days into the season, and never hit more than 20 homers, or batted over .250 in the coming seasons!!

However

If you want a less unpredictable game, go to the options page, and change talent randomness to 1, and the players will rarely change their ratings. Have a quick read of the manual aswell, it helps in understanding the game

Thanks,
What kind of defense do you have, especially in comparison to the teams those pitchers came from?

At the same time I've seen Fielder hit over 600 HR in his career. It's really a crap shoot, but that's just like real baseball. Some prospects flame out, some become stars, and some guys like Cliff Lee have random years out of nowhere. You'll notice the biggest problem is the fact that you can coerce the AI to trade away a dumb amount of prospects for very little and you can claim 4+ star players off waivers that are not even on the 40-man roster.

My teams are actually very poor on defense. That is an excellent correlation that I overlooked.

I guess there are quite a few factors that could relate to the poorer pitching (even the ballpark they pitch in as well I guess).

I have been playing for a month and I think over time I will see things balance out and also see things I overlooked.

Thanks for the input, what a fun game!
