Teaching young players new positions..

I'm trying to teach my LF Cody Johnson a new position - 1B. He's in AA, and I'm trying to teach him the position so that when he gets to the majors he can play first, but it doesn't seem like his ratings are getting any higher.

Also, Francoeur, believe it or not, is a beast in my game and I'm going to probably keep him at right field. However, I have Heyward in the minors who ONLY plays RF. But shouldn't it be more realistic that any RF can play LF and vice versa? Or do I have to groom Heyward at left while he's in the minors also?

How do you teach players new positions?

Taking your questions in reverse order:

Yes, Heyward is going to need some playing time at LF in the minors to develop at that position. If you go to the player strategy screen, there is an option to force the player to start at whatever position you want.

The same would be true for Johnson, except that it's usually not possible to move from the IF to OF, or vice versa. Most players in OOTP only have ratings in one or the other, and Johnson is no exception. If you click on the 'ratings' tab of the player profile, you'll see that all his infield ratings (range, error, arm, DP) are 1. In short, he will never learn to play 1B.

Omar Infante is an example of the exception to the rule, and would be able to play just about anywhere except Catcher, just like his real life counterpart.

All of this is not 100% realistic in my mind, I mean, just about any outfielder ought to be able to learn 1B. But that's the way it is.

Work Ethic and Intelligence of the player will affect how quickly the player learns a new position once you start teaching them it.
