Day to day injuries and demotions

I had a backup catcher go down for 2 weeks, so I put him on the DL and brought up my AAA catcher. What I didn't notice is that he is day to day himself. So I tried to send him back down, but the game won't let me, I'm told to put him on the DL (he is day to day for 1 DAY).

Is there a rule IRL preventing demotion of injured players? Why doesn't the game just allow me to send down a player who is injured day to day?

Are minor league options and/or waivers turned on? Is he out of options? Does he have to clear waivers first?

Options are turned on, but this player shows that he is in his final option year. He's not yet able to refuse a minors assignment, or anything like that, either. And once the injury was healed, I was able to demote him to AAA without difficulty or messages, so I'm pretty sure it was the injury that was the issue.

Here is a nice primer on transaction rules. There are some interesting work arounds on the 60 day DL used in the playoffs.

As Bruce M says an injured player cannot be optioned to the minors. The question I have is, does injured mean, "on the DL" type injury or does a bruised knee, that could be played on prevent a player from being optioned IRL.

I recently called up a promising young pitcher from my AAA team (and added him to my 40 man roster!) only to discover he was out for the season after the fact. So now he's on my DL gaining service time.

I guess it pays to take your time when on the transactions screen.

A player who is, by most valid medical assessments, deemed unable to play, would not be able to be sent to the minor leagues, neither optionally nor outright. The major league club isn't obligated to put the player on the DL (if it wants to use up a roster spot for a player who can't participate, it's free to do so), but it cannot send him to the minors if he is genuinely unable to play. If the club tried, the player could easily file a grievance.

A player actually placed on the major league DL cannot be assigned to the minors leagues whatsoever, except in a very few exceptions during spring training or after the season.

If it's a day-to-day injury scenario, where the player could possibly play in a game, the area is more grey. Such players are sometimes sent down to the minors.
