OOTP 10 vs. 6.5

Could as many folks as wish to please give me a rundown of the differences between OOTP 10 and 6.5? I see lot of strong feelings, but I can't really find a breakdown anywhere.

It's difficult to do. OOTP v6.5 was the best game of it's day circa 2005. OOTP vX is the best game of its day circa 2009. Any breakdown I give you will be favorable to vX. I think it's indisputable that vX is a stronger overall product. YMMV

The basic difference now is there's not as much you can do with OOTP6.5 as you can with OOTPX and in that respect it's a little simpler to get the hang of. The main difference between OOTP2006 (aka OOTP7) and OOTP6.5, however, besides that the former was less solid feature and bug-wise, is that the interface was drastically different (smaller fonts, different ways to access different screens, etc) which for a lot of people, including myself somewhat, took quite awhile to get used to.

If you're new to the series and wondering which to buy, though, I'd definitely go with OOTPX. Getting used to the interface shouldn't be that difficult because it's better now with the 4th iteration and you don't have to get unused to something else like OOTP6.5.

You could compare their newsletters to see their new features and see some screenshots, but that of course won't take in the stuff added from previous versions:

You ask a difficult question. That's like trying to compare the differences between a Ford Model T and a 2007 Ford Mustang.
  1. the interfaces are vastly different; v10's interface is a continuation and evolution of the interface introduced with v2006; although v10's interface is as advanced and different than v2006's as v2006's was than v6.5
  2. the layout of the screens is quite different; v10 adds a lot more detail and presents more than twice as much information as v6.5, on a per-screen basis
  3. v10 has about five times the number of features than v6.5: game replays, FaceGen player pictures; much more full-featured minor leagues; the concept of a "league" being a whole "universe" in which many major leagues can operate in parallel; a mature geographical system, which places leagues in a certain country, which maintains its relationship with other countries based on their "baseball quality" ratings and their physical proximity
  4. the statistical engine is much more advanced, subtle, and customizable; the game is also capable of annually adjusting league statistical output, to match the real-life statistical fluctuations of major-league baseball
  5. the actual execution of gameplay and AI behavior, when managing games, is more intelligent and true to real-life philosophies, strategies, and situational behaviors and outcomes
  6. v10 has an in-game historical record-keeping and report generating capability that is miles ahead of v6.5; if you know what CatoBase was, picture a more-advanced, built-in CatoBase

And those things are about 10% of the total amount of differences between the games. They're so different, it's difficult to compare the two. It would be much easier to explain the differences between v6.5 and v2006; then, to explain the differences between v2006 and v7; then, between v7 and v8; etc.

They are almost two completely different games. I would say the only thing 6.5 has going for it is that it is easier to use and it is a little more intuitive.

Otherwise OOTPX is far superior. But there is a learning curve and it takes some time to learn.
