In general, it is the first five letters of the last name followed by the first two letters of the first name + 01. Obviously the 01 is just a counter and could be increased for common names (e.g. there is obviously a griffke01 and 02).
If you REALLY want to see, you can open up the Lahman dbase with a dbase program and look through the ids yourself. But I find guessing much less hassle.

You can also go to Baseball Reference and click on a players page. The html has his info in it that you need for importing into OOTP.

I am trying to import historical player and filled in the name code then I select import and it goes to the game files. What file do I select to import player file? I was assuming it was a .csv file but can't find it. Any ideas?
