Hi- i just dl the demo last night and have been playing this nonstop (i'm getting addicted). before i take the plunge though there are a few things i want to figure out. first my goal is to play through history with the same teams and the same players though not necessarily the same players on the same teams (i want to see how what changes early on ends up effecting the longterm team finances). I want to start my league at some point in the 1800's. When i go to do this is automatically creates a second league. Why does it do this? Will there be an 1893 world series between these 2 leagues? Will teams change as time goes on until 1901 when the normal AL/NL existed?

I beleive the game only recognizes the AL & NL from the Lahman database. It recognizes players & stats from the National Association & American Association but not the league itself. The reason you have AL & NL is because the NA teams were changed to AL & NL in the database so the teams would import and to make it easier to start a league in the 1800's.
Before ootp9 we could only start a league in 1901 and had to do a long work around to get a 19th century league started.

I do have to caution you that the game is a little more limited for the 1800's than the modern era. Simply because baseball was more chaotic back then. Teams changing, roster sizes, different rules. The game can get you the 19th century players but its going to take a little more attention to your league than the modern era to get the results you want.

I would suggest making a plan on how you want to expand. You should also plan game schedules, rotation sizes etc. You can change how your league will look by editing the teams csv & team franchise files in the lahman database. So if you want Chicago's nickname to be the Cubs, Orphans, Whitestockings etc you can edit that. Or if you want the cubs in the AL. You do have to have an even # of teams in each league for the first year. I dont think you can edit them all to NL for starting a historical league.
I think there is a work around if you just want the NL but i dont know for sure. I dont think you have to have a world series.
Keep in mind that this wont make the players import automatically to the teams they played on irl
