Getting Dominant Teams
My goal is to create a league where a few "dominant franchises" that fight for a few playoff spots year in and year out and large numbers of "other franchises" that compete for "Bowl Games" (so basically, I'm making College Football in baseball
). Is market size the all-important variable in determining which teams will be more dominant over a long period of simmed time? I figure this would make most sense, as market size => $$$ => better players => wins (ie: Yankees). Any insight is appreciated. |

Maybe I should have posted in GD...anyway, I ran a 50 year sim in an 8-team league. There was a 13 market size team, a 10 market size, four 8 market sizes, a 6 market size, and a 4 market size. The results? See attached image.
First off, the teams market size is in their names (not sure why I named one team "Twicefours", but they are an 8 not a 4). In general, the 13 market size team dominated the league. They started with a budget of more than $220 million in 2000 (the 1st year). The 4 market size team were the perennial bottom-feeders only finishing with a winning record 9 times (and .500 another two years). As the years progressed, the differences in market sizes polarized the franchises, so that Washington was dominating the league with 100-win seasons, and Houston barely won 40 games!! However, market sizes between 10-6 (as what most teams are created with) don't seem to have a significant effect on franchise performance. The examples of this are the Omaha Tenners, which struggled more often than not, and the Baltimore Sixers, which often finished around .500 or slightly above, and nonetheless, were a threat each year. I don't really know what I've proven with this, as it's a small sample size that doesn't give clear-cut answers. I can conclude with conviction that a 13 market size team will dominate and a 4 market size team will struggle. However, more information from other people is welcome and appreciated. (May I also add how much I appreciate the speed at which X sims, saves, and also the budget draft feature!!!) |
