Questionable cpu strategy?

Hi, i download the ootp10 demo to try the game out. I'm new to this game and for the most part i really like it so far.

I was playing a game in a historical league (1971) me (Giants) vs the Pirates. It was extra innings and Pittsburgh ph Sanguillen for the SS Gene Alley in the bottom of the10th inning of a 1-1 game. Much to my surprise in the top of the 11th inning Sanguillen was playing SS?? The Pirates still had Jose Pagan on the bench so why wouldn't the cpu have opted for him to come in to play SS? Is this a common type of cpu strategy where they use players out of position? Thanks for any input.

Sadly, yeah, you do get questionable AI decisions like that. It doesn't happen often, but looking back over the course of a season at player's fielding stats and sometimes you'll see outfielders play the infield or vice versa.

Does Sanguillen have any infield ratings at all? Even poor ratings will sometimes get thought of as 'Eh, we'll throw him out there for a few innings and he shouldn't kill us.'

In a current solo league Coco Crisp has a 2 infield range, and 3s for the other ratings. He only had a position rating at centerfield, but the AI started him at first base once last season and he's made three appearances of one inning each there this season. He now has a 1 position rating for first.

There are some issues with players ending up in strange positions, which mostly results from the AI PHing too often (compared to real life) for position players. This is better in OOTP10, but still a problem.

However, it also true that the AI tends to be conservative about clearing the bench or the bullpen when a game goes into extra innings. Since the AI can't think like a human, Markus had to give the AI some tendencies which work well most of the time, but can produce some questionable decisions in specific situations. There is simply no solution for that. OTOH, in real life many players have an inning or two at unusual positions. I know of one game in which Willie Mays played SS, for example.

I took a look and Sanguillen is only listed as a catcher. Yes i think this playing out of position does come from the overly amount of pinch hitting that the cpu does on occasion.

WTF, this is baseball66, somehow i have two accounts here, must have made one years ago that i forgot about. From now on i will make sure my computer logs me on as baseball66 only.

At least it burned only one player, albeit playing the wrong position. What really burns me is when it PHits and then replaces the PH with a guy playing the wrong position.

I had a closer look at Sanguillen and see that he is only listed as a catcher and no other position but has an infield range of 3, arm of 2 and turn double play at 1. Now granted that isn't much but maybe these should be set at 0. I also see he has outfield range, error and arm of 8,11 and 11. To big of an undertaking to change everyplayer, lol, maybe i'll change my own team and see how the sim box scores look.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the AI values hitting ability WAY too much and fielding ability WAY too little. If Sanguillen, for example, hits much better than Pagan, the AI will want Sanguillen in the lineup over Pagan. It doesn't matter to the AI that Sanguillen has a poor rating at SS; ANY rating whatseover is good enough for the AI to keep Sanguillen's bat in the lineup.

I played it quite a bit a few years ago. It's a lot like playing the pen-and-paper game except faster. There were a couple cute features like the ball animation (it was especially satisfying to watch your homers travel over the fence) and background sounds.

But as I said, it's been many years.
