Does it matter where I place hitters in the lineup? ("Protection")
Is there such a thing as protecting your rookie in this game where instead of putting him immediately at the third spot in the lineup, you put him say in the eighth or seventh slot? I'm just wondering thanks.

I don't think any information has been found to support the idea of protection in OOTP. Out of tradition, I try to protect my guys for a while anyways.

One of the best ways to answer questions like this is to watch what the AI does. People are inclined to dismiss the AI, but the fact is that if something is important to the success of a team -- and it is possible to program that something into the behavior of the AI -- the AI will probably be doing it.
For example, the AI does not protect players, therefore -- unless proven otherwise -- it is a reasonably good bet that protection is not important in the game as the game is designed today. There are aspects of the game where this gets pretty cloudy -- because of limited ability to make the AI think like a human -- but it's a pretty good way of thinking about these things most of the time.
