You guys are going to want to check this out. Members of the PEBA have had a chance to beta test DesertFox07's new OOTP fantasy utility, and I've got to say that it adds a whole new level of enjoyment to your league. It's literally a game within a game! A brilliant concept that's very well executed, and DesertFox07 has shown a commitment to working out bugs and adding feature enhancements.
I'm greatly anticipating the first public version release on the 29th. It's an absolutely blast.

No offense intended and with all due respect, J.R., but some of us - and maybe even most of us - just aren't.

It looks like it lets you play fantasy baseball with your OOTP league instead of real MLB players.

It's another layer of entertainment to add to your OOTP league experience. I'm most excited about the possibilities for online leagues, where a group of owners who have come to know and love their players can now gather to enjoy this new meta-game. A lot of times, online league owners become very knowledgeable about their own players but don't get a chance to learn as much about the rest of the players in the league. Running a fantasy league provides an opportunity for them to branch out and begin following the events of the league as a whole. It's also the perfect way to bring people together and get them talking and participating, which is of course what any league commissioner wants to encourage.

It's a web mod that works similar to StatsLab, but obviously is geared towards creating and running Fantasy baseball leagues based off of an OOTP game. You can view a live demo of the private beta league at the OOTP Fantasy Leagues web site.
It works like any web site. You install it on a web server, connect it to your web based OOTP database and then begin creating leagues and inviting owners. Anyone can be commissioner of a league (though only one at a time right now) and anyone can join and manage their own fantasy team. There is a fantasy draft based on the way StatsLab's draft works and a host of other features to scout and manage a fantasy team. As Corsairs has said, I have ideas for many more features still to come to enhance the experience, but wanted to get started with a more simple, straight forward experience now. I honestly found myself enjoying managing and playing my team during the private beta so I hope others find it enjoyable as well. I'm open to feedback and suggestion requests as well so please don't be shy. I know Corsairs hasn't been and that has been a really good thing. Quote:
I've also thought many, many times about making my solo NABL league an online league, but I've spent so much time on building it over the last three years, I hate the thought of other people owning teams in it. I do, however, like the thought of going head to head with others in a fantasy league based off that same game. Would add a new level of excitement over both the players and what's happening in that game. It's likely gong to be for some and not others and that's fine by me. It's here in 2 weeks if you want it.

In the spirit of OOTP releases and the Road to Release (of which I actually got to write one of this year), I am writing three articles leading up to Wednesdays release.
Toady is article the first: The Feature list. Check it out at the site.

There's no way that bad-mouthing someone's independent project, for no other reason than to state how much you dislike it, is anything but childish and elitist. You have a problem with the bugs in OOTP, that's fine. You don't like the direction OOTP is going, that's fine too. If you think other people are misguided in how OOTP should be developed in the future, that's well within your right to opine. But comments like this have ZERO value. Why would you discourage people from sharing independent OOTP utilities? At worst, it's something you would never use. Get over yourself.

Greatly looking forward to the 1.0 release. Jeff, Dan saw that you were talking about releasing the source code. Between GoogleCode and GitHub, Dan's more familiar with GoogleCode, so I suppose that would be our pick, but either way would be fine. The PEBA will be implementing this new utility as soon as it's ready for release; I already have some creative ideas for rewards for owners who win their PEBA fantasy league. And of course we're up for more testing whenever you're ready to begin work on 1.1!

I haven't personally worked on OOTP Fantasy Leagues, so I'm saying this with complete objectivity... I believe this is going to be a great addition to the mod community and I greatly appreciate the efforts of those who have put this together.
I think an important aspect of this project that some of you are overlooking is that it will help connect OOTP with the fantasy league market. Obviously, it's an outside-the-box concept, in terms of how OOTP is typically utilized. And yes, it's probably true that many people won't find it all that appealing, but if this helps promote OOTP to some fantasy leaguers who are currently unfamiliar with the franchise, that would be a real boon for the company! As most of you are undoubtedly aware, fantasy leagues are enormously popular these days. So far, we've only been able to promote OOTP as being "like" a fantasy league (even though most of us realize it's much deeper and, to most of us, more entertaining.) But now, with this mod, we're making an even more direct connection between the fantasy and sim genres. And of course, the timing is perfect, what with the baseball season winding down (and since most fantasy leagues end with the regular season.) To anyone making negative comments, keep in mind that this isn't Markus'/Andreas' project. They're not doing this instead of fixing bugs, nor are the guys who are working on it doing this instead of beta testing. It is a mod, independent of OOTP. So please try and be open-minded about OOTPFL, because anything that helps promote OOTP to new potential customers and raises its profile is a good thing! (Remember: More customers -> more $$$ for the company -> additional programmers -> more bug fixes! )

Road to 1.0 #2: Screen Grab Gallery
It's Monday so it's time for the Road to 1.0 #2: Screen Grab Gallery. Even my faithful beta testers led by Corsairs will want to check these out as they contain some never before seen views into the admin and commissioner control panels. It's only a small sampling of all the views available, but more to tie everyone over until Wednesday.
OOTP Fantasy League Road to 1.0: Screen Grab Gallery. Be sure to click the link beneath each image in the lightbox view to see the full size image (and get all the details). And yes, as Muzamba said, this is a 100% unsolicited and independent OOTP Mod project. Yes, I am posting it in the general discussion forum to help generate a little more awareness, but it's still 100% my baby. As I said earlier, it may be for some and not others. If you want it come get it. If not, no biggie to me. Thanks to all my positive backers so far. It's quite encouraging. @Corsairs: I'm thinking GoogleCode as well only because the source is already in my own private SVN repository. I like the social aspect of GitHub, but I do like SVN a little more.

HAPPY BETA RELEASE DAY!
Of course, as I'm doing my final checks and run through I found a big scheduling bug in the league model that has to be fixed before this goes out because it will come back as a bug pretty quickly. So I'm working to fix that ASAP then I will start to bundle the release. Stay Tuned.
