Why won't he hit???
In the GUBA, I have by far the best SS in the league in Player Report for #3 Gustav Boqvist.
Best by ratings anyway. Boqvist has a career OPS of .720, which is an OPS+ of 101. He is in the top 20 in the 30-team league in Contact and Power against RHP. And he has plain out sucked. I'm very happy and comfortable with fact that players will go through bad spells or even bad seasons. That's what happens in real life, it would be boring if all players played to their ratings. But I am starting to really not enjoy my team because my superstar ratings-wise is just simply not hitting at all. I've tried batting him 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th over the last two years... maybe I sit him against lefties? I'm just really at a loss for what I can do to make him hit to his ratings and was wondering if there was some magic formula that I'm missing. |

he can hit LHP just not RHP....is he a 5 star guy because of his defense?
Maybe he is Edgar Rentria. He is also only 24...could be Starlin Castro. 1-20 scale? his defense is impressive. as is his speed. My take is be patient. Slightly concerned about his lack of minor league experience. Gordon Beckham had approx 170 AB's in the minors while Frank Thomas had 900 and Robin Ventura had 600. His eye and avoid K's are terrible, but his 2nd and 3rd seasons are respectable. |

What are the league average slash stats?
One of the reasons I grew to dislike online leagues was a completely irrational belief that somehow they could suppress the performance of highly rated players. I remember a No. 1 Draft pick 8's and 9's (10 pt scale) across the board who never batted over 0.238 or hit over 25HR yet his ratings never declined.

Probably shouldnt bat him 2-5, bat him 7-9 until he shows something. Bat him 9th behind the pitcher. Maybe humiliation will work.

How does your ballpark look? Does it not favor left handed hitters? I have 1 league that is a toughie for righties but great for lefties (especially power hitting lefties). I've done very well picking up 25 HR power lefties because they usually hit 30-35 HR for me but I picked up 1 right handed batter who was a .300 hitter before his time on my team and now he's hitting in the .260s for me.

My pet theory: His Intelligence is low, which makes him more prone to inconsistency or falling into slumps. I realize that the manual says high Work Ethic helps to avoid slumps, but I like to think Intelligence plays into it as well; I had an all-star shortstop with killer batting ratings but low Intelligence (high Work Ethic) who underperformed for two seasons.
You might use him in situations where he's most likely to succeed in hopes that he catches fire, with the thinking that those who have long slumps will also go on tears for good stretches. Just my $.02. Btw, are scouts on in the GUBA? It could be that he's just not as good as the ratings you see might indicate. Last edited by Qwerty75; 10-02-2011 at 12:50 AM. |

Even though he is underperforming, you should still be able to trade him for someone with inspiring promise....who can really get your hopes up...before dashing them again... |

What Jagger means is that you can trade your underperforming player for a 4 star who will hit .324/.400/.525 with 25 HR and 100 RBI, who you then sign for 4yrs/$25 million each. Next year he hits .255 and gets injured for 3 months and never hits over .280 or 25 HR again while your underperforming player whacks 35 HR one year and takes his team to the WS.
