Does the game handicap you?
I won 2 World Series in a row, and every move I've made since then has only made me worse. The most recent one is the craziest thing yet. I extended my 28 yr. old CF, who, last season hit .318/.405/.637 with 51 HR, 53 SB, 12 CS for 4 yrs @ $15 mil. Through 87 games in the next season he's hitting .239/.299/.371, and for some reason the AI keeps batting him leadoff. His ratings, except for power and speed, have also dropped off the table.
He's not the only one either. It seems like all of my veteran sluggers except for one have forgotten how to hit a baseball, while all of my young guys are doing pretty well. I also cut a few relief pitchers with 6 and 7 ERA's and now these guys are dominating for other teams. 24 yr old SP with a 9.74 ERA in 4 starts for me. 1.52 ERA with Oakland in 3 starts. Small sample size maybe. 34 yr. old RP with a 5.74 ERA in 15 innings with me, .90 ERA in 30 innings with half as many walks with Anaheim. 28 yr. old lefty closer had a 1.75 ERA with 38 sv three years ago. Since then he's gotten progressively worse and lost the closers job. This year he had a 6.55 ERA in 22 innings with 20 walks. Now with TB he's at 2.48 ERA 29 IP with 8 walks. This has been going on for over 2 seasons now since they lowered the mound. The first 2 seasons I kept the same coaching staff that won 2 World Series, but this season I fired the pitching coach and head coach, I've made a few trades to try to revamp my bullpen, and I'm still losing like crazy. So, is the game handicapping me? Do I have a cancer on my team that's sabotaging things? Could it be because all of my veteran players were brought in through trades and free agency? Just bad luck? It's reflecting real life in a Baseball sense.

Bad luck. But did you really give up on a starting pitcher after 4 starts?

Are you playing your games out or are you simming your games?
Theoretically, you should have a significant advantage if you play out your games. If you use the available defenses which the AI never uses, you should immediately get an advantage. Your intelligent use of pitchers, both relief and starters, should give you an advantage over the AI. Your use of steals and hit and runs in the proper situation should give you an advantage. However, IMO, I still think the field is tilted to the AI when playing out your games. |

I play some and sim some, whatever I'm in the mood for.
And yes I did give up on a pitcher after 4 starts. My entire staff had imploded when I traded for him so I figured I'd better re-flip him while he still had some value left. The guy that is still blowing me away is the centerfielder. Up to his age 27 season he had been good for an average of 50 homers and 50 steals with good avg and Obp. I signed him to the 4 yrs 15 mil extension and since that time he's become worthless. 27 years old, a better version of Willie Mays and now it seems like he died and his dead body is still getting at-bats. Never seen a player as good as him in any baseball sim and never seen a good player fall off that young either. |
