Inaugural fantasy draft for historical leagues

When drafting in career play, why does the A1 take players with no consideration to the future? For instance; I started a historical league in 1911 with an inaugural fantasy draft, the first player chosen is Cy Young, 43 yrs old and in his final season in the majors. He only pitched 126 innings that season with a 7-9 w-l mark and 3.78 era.

I have potential ratings based on peak seasons remaining. I have rating calculations based on 5 years, which I think should only consider his previous two years and nothing in the future since it's his last year. I have predefined draft value checked but I think that only kicks in after the first season.

Any ideas on how to make the draft more competitive?

I cant speak for 1911 but for the 2010 game the AI takes Strasburg and Harper within the 1st 3 picks every time. while players like Randy Johnson and Roger Clemens are available as late as the 5th and 7th rds when i took them.
Maddux is among 1 of the top 10 usually.

Out of curiosity whyd ya start with 1911?

No particular reason. I find it more fascinating to deal with the past players then current ones. I have several I'm working with, mostly pre 1980. What I'm really trying to overcome is my dominance over the AI. Almost without exception my teams end up with above .650 winning percentage year after year and almost always "win it all" The inaugural drafts, first year drafts, and trades have become laughable. (I just finished a season and one teams A1 traded the leagues current batting champ to another AI controled team for 38 year old pinch hitter whose real career had ended 5 years prior, wtf?) With all the choices during setup I have yet to find a combination that makes the A1 competitive. I have been reading some other theads and this seems to be a concern with others as well. Short of playing strictly in commissioner mode and making all the choices for all the teams I'm not sure how best to play this game. Oh well, I will keep experimenting.
