Is it possible just to "play a game" with OOTP?

Hi, in my younger days (mid-20s, back in the '80s) I was an avid Strat-o-Matic and StatisPro tabletop baseball game player. However, job/family/etc. pressures kind of put that hobby on the back burner and I've not been involved in it since then.

The situation has changed a bit now and I was interested in getting back into the hobby, on the computer instead of tabletop this time. I have investigated all the games, but for some reason, I really don't know why, I've been on OOTP's mailing list for a while and I naturally gravitated toward it first. I also saw wonderful things about it in my research, and the fact that the interface might not be as user friendly as other games and it has tons of bells and whistles didn't scare me off, the software that I can't handle hasn't been invented yet.

However, I downloaded a demo last night and quite honestly, I don't know that it's for me, because it does not seem like the game "works" unless you are going to "create" a team and replay an entire season. And that's never been my cup of tea, even when I was playing tabletop regularly. I know that's against the grain of why people play baseball sim games, but I've always been one to follow my muse and I did that when I played tabletop baseball, there was no real rhyme or reason, I just enjoyed playing the game whenever and however the notion struck me.

So I'm asking ... is it possible to take OOTP and, if the notion strikes me, play a game between two teams simply out of the blue for my own amusement, or, say, play a seven-game "what-if" World Series between the 1961 Yankees and 1976 Reds, without having to create all the other stuff? If it isn't, then I'm going to uninstall the demo and walk away, no hard feelings and not knocking OOTP in any shape, form or fashion, other than to say it's not what I'm looking for.

In OOTP 12, they are adding a simulation module that lets you play exhibition games between teams of different eras. Here's what the official newsletter said about the feature:

Added a simulation module, allowing you to match up two teams from the same league for a set number of games and see the simulation results. This is great for research purposes or just for toying around. For example, how would the 1927 Yankees fare against the 2004 Red Sox?

OOTPB is a management sim. Despite its wide appeal and customization capabilities it may not be for everyone.

If baseball management (field or office) is not your interest you may not be happy.

It takes a little work to set up. But it can be done. Here's a quick-and-dirty method:

1. Create a Custom League: 1 League - 1 Division - 2 Teams
2. Schedule: 0 games (or 1 game)
3. Playoffs: Best of 7 (or None)
4. Import League
5. Edit League Structure: Delete the two fictional teams
6. Import two historical teams (path: historical.odb)
7. Delete all Free Agents (the remnants of the two fictional teams)
8. Sim until Opening Day or until Playoffs Begin

BTW, I simmed the best-of-seven series. NY27 beat LA66, 4 games to 2.

Pstrickert is right on with his advice.

It works quite well in OOTP11. I don't replay entire seasons. Instead I am a short tournament or playoff player. It can be done in OOTP without too much trouble.

I'm not sure it can be done with the demo but if it can go to Padresfan's site and dl Pstrickert's 1959 World Series ready to go setup.

Makes for some really great baseball pitch by pitch/pbp baseball !

I think OOTP is a wonderful game for career and fictious leagues, etc. It has a wonderful interface, etc. Many options.

I would recommend you try my other favorite baseball game. It is much better for someone who prefers to run a solo replay of a historical season without worrying about finaces and front office management. It is also excellent and extremly easy to play an exhibition game.

My other favorite game and the one that may work for your.... hmmmm... "different desires" .... is Action! PC Baseball...

This should probably be stickied.
