version 11 or 12
 

I am new to what I assume is called text simulation gaming. I see a few out there and was intrigued by this one, also should i wait for version 12 to come out or buy version 11?

12 is coming out on 6/20. I would wait.

You can try the 11 demo in the meantime.

Also, I think 8 is available free on the website. That would at least get your feet wet with some aspects of the game.

I have been tinkering with the demo for version 11. it seems fun but almost seems overwhelming as well. does the learning curve get easier?

Yeah, it does.

The problem, if you want to classify it as one, is that there are so many options that you can fiddle with. For some of them, you have to have what I think is a deep knowledge of the way MLB works to even understand.

If you can do it with the demo, you could try the fictional quickstart that comes with the game and play a few seasons to get your feet wet. I think it is called the ABA or something like that.

Thank you for the help. I consider myself a huge baseball enthusiast and probably know more about the sport and its intricacies than i should. I'll tinker around and see what I think.

The menu bars and drop downs actually seem to duplicate in spots and its not as overwhelming as first thought. Lots of options, which can be a good thing. Seems pretty sweet. What is the average time it takes to manage/play a game? Im wanting to try but heading out from work. Sounds like a good buy. One i think i'll be making.

Oh also, is it possible to not lose your franchise? IE it seems a new version comes out every year. Would I be able to upgrade to the newest version without having to start over if i have a franchise in an older version?

OOTP11 has an option to import OOTP10 game. Also the OOTP community is GREAT! So helpful with answering questions to creating logos and jerseys.

TDO I would wait also for version 12 if I were u.....but play with 8 or 11 demo...theres tons of add ons for 11 & 12...makes your gaming experience very intense.

I wouldnt worry about the learning curve. Theres so many ways to play the game. Hell some of us are still finding things out we didnt know about the game even thoufh weve played since ootp1 or 2.

OOTP is the only one I have purchased.
The "Graphics Based" games (Madden, MLB The Show, etc.) were lacking for me. I always focused on the franchise modes and found them too easy. I found OOTP while looking for a football sim I could play online vs. other people. Somehow I found the online league I am in first, that took me to OOTP's site and things have never been the same. lol Hell my wife’s nickname for me came from my first W.S. Championship in the league. She came home and I was designing a Championship Ring to use as my avatar. I am pretty CPU illiterate so I had been at it for about 3 hours. The moniker "Champ" was born. lol
I still have not played on game in a solo league but I am enamored with our online league. Best $25 or 30 or 45 or whatever I pay each year I have spent on entertainment.

If this is true then you will love this game, TDO, and the learning curve will be short and gentle.

... unless the model in your mind does not conform to the model in the game (or vice versa)... In that case, the learning curve is a long, long slog. :)

no offense buddy, but if someone is a baseball fan and a baseball gamer then the transition to OOTP 11 or 123 is fairly easy, It still took me 3 months to figure out the things i wanted to know at 1st, while I see guys who claim to be baseball fans that gave up after a few days cuz they dont know how to read a manual, and were not given answers to ther ques on here or didnt know how to use those answers, with their lack of abiltiy & knowledge.
I owned 6.5 hardly played it played free 8 for 2 weeks before buying 11.

No offense taken, Southsider... :) (Besides, we already hate each other, historically speaking... Can't do nothin' 'bout it! :D )

I agree that it makes life easier for a newbie to receive answers to their questions, no matter how basic. That's just good customer service, and it's an area where our "community" sometimes drops the ball (whether in the name of having fun / sarcasm, or just plain malicious dismissiveness).

... However... ;)

Maybe I'm only talking about myself here, but I think it's also important to keep in mind people's baseball backgrounds, especially other baseball "sims" (scare quotes to include EA's MLB series and other "arcade-y" titles).

If you're coming from a "cards-and-dice" background (like me with APBA, or others with Strat-o-Matic), what you don't realize, sometimes, is that you didn't learn how to play baseball or manage a baseball team... but you learned how to play Strat-Ball or APBA-Ball ("I only get 6 ABs to use with this guy with 10 6s on his card, so I'll use him with bases loaded to get the triple, or I'll use him as a free intentional walk with a runner on third... ")

So then you get to a more realistic sim like our beloved OOTP and all the sudden... you have to first unlearn what you thought you knew, and then learn the new game.

I guess what I'm trying to say is this: What seemed easy to learn for you, may not be easy to learn for me, or the next guy who knocks on our collective door.

Or... maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks, but it takes a lot more effort and patience by the trainer. ;)

OK, youse guys. Lemme clarify youse:

To love OOTP Baseball, you've got to be:

1. Really into baseball, not necessarily as a viewer or participant, but
2. Really into baseball, the game itself with its balanced perfection,
3. Really into baseball statistics,
4. Really into text simulation games,
5. Really into complicated options, rules, and procedures, and finally
6. Really into reading manuals or willing to try and fail at many things.
