Recalled vs. Purchased Contract

I just hit September 1 and expanded my active roster. First, I let the AI "set up my complete organization." It promoted a bunch of AAA guys who were already on the 40-man, and my "Major Transactions" report lists them (correctly, I think) as "recalled" from AAA.

Then, because I wanted a 3rd catcher, I manually promoted a guy from AAA, who was also on the 40-man. For this guy, however, the report says that I "purchased his contract."

Turns out, ALL my manual promotions from the 40-man are reported as "purchased," and all the AI moves are "recalled." Is this an error, or am I totally missing something?

This is traditional baseball terminology. If a player has been on the 40 man then their contract is purchased from the minor club. This goes back to the days when minor clubs were independent entities even when the major league club owned them. The major league club bought the contract of the player when they went to the majors.

When the contract is purchased, the player gets a new major league contract. So all players on the 40 man have major league contracts. If the player was optioned to the minors, sent down after the contract was purchased then the contract is recalled. This goes back to the days when major league clubs sold major league players to minor league clubs with the option to recall players at any time.

Purchased=going on the 40 man for the first time
Recall = guy has a major league contract already and is being promoted from the minors to the majors.

The terminology comes from when Baseball operated more like today's European Soccer (Football for those outside the US) leagues.

Thanks for the reply!

So I guess I'm looking at a bug, since my manual moves are all logged as "purchased" even when they involve players who were already on the 40-man.

Looks like the "mis-logged" guys have all used their option year, though, so the bug must be in the report's logging recognition, and not an actual problem with recognizing who's on the 40-man and who isn't.

Now that I think of it, Le Grande Orange(LGO), the rules expert on the forum, did mention OOTP did not always use the correct terminology. For guys out of option in RL they can't be in the minors and on the 40 man roster. So I would assume those contracts would be purchased as well. I am not sure if OOTP is accurate in the terms though.
