Not that I'm aware of.

I was only asking because in the very nice photo pack that has managers ,coaches and players there is also umpires. So i was just wondering if those photos were for the game. High Heat used to have umpires names in the game
in the box score, so i thought maybe again it might be in the game and i was missing it somewhere. Title bout has photos for ref's so again i thought maybe it was in OOTP.

I do think that would be another feature to make it even more real.

Different strike zones for different plate umpires?
Now that would be a different form of realism, get that screen that shows a different strike zone according to the ump for the game that you are playing.

I hate to say it again, but you need to see the way FM handles refs

I wish I understood FM as much as I do coaching youth soccer.

I wouldn't want different strike zones as I believe that would take away from realism in a text sim, but I'm open minded.

Well, Umps could be graded on each game (we see in the game already where players get upset with umpires) and they could each have their own personality or temperament.

I'm not seeing how that would add anything to the game?

Different umps do affect different pitchers.

Overall this is not a very good idea. Adding an extra variable to the play result would require a great deal of programming. If it were just cosmetic then I say okay as long as the feature can be an option. I for one would never use the umpire if it were an option.

What data exists? There may be a perception that umpires affect pitchers but I've seen no rigorous data. In fact I'd say that many pitchers adjust to the umpire or the catcher works on the umpire to affect his strike zone. Unless you can accurately quantify the effect of each umpire on the pitcher/catcher combo, I'd argue against implementing it in the game.

If you went the simplistic route and just assessed strike zone differences between umpire without correlating them to pitcher type or pitcher/catcher then you would have an artificial fudge factor with no basis in reality.

In MLB there are a minimum of 60 umpires, 15X4.

For starting pitchers at 5 per team that would be 9000 interactions. For an MLB set up with 12 pitchers per team that would be 21,600 interactions. These don't include the catcher.

I want the ratings/game engine to determine the results, not have to throw another variable into the mix due to umpire strike zones.. too much work for what little effect it should have, if any.

^ what RchW said.. totally agree

Once again we are seeing the age old argument that is had between the stat-heads vs the non-stat-heads. One side believes that if you can't quanitate something with numbers then it doesn't exists versus the other side that sees life the non-logical way, as a series of interpersonal interactions that determine what happens on and off the field. Both sides have a solid points of view and OOTP is perfect for both sides of this argument. OOTP satisfies both sides with the statement, "If you don't like the feature turn it off." Some examples of this is scouting, coaching and player personality; these are equitable to the subjects of catcher and umpire influence on the game of baseball.
I have been around since OOTP2 and every time we come to a new version, we see suggestions made that seem to upset one side or the other. But every year that Marcus adds a feature like this he gives us the option to use it or not. My suggestion: Let the masses suggestion options, don't get upset about the brainstorming and let Marcus do what he does best; that is add features that he thinks will better his program (and business) and then give us the option to turn them on or off as he most always does.

I partially agree but when faced with a request that might take a lot of programming time for very little game play benefit then I reserve the right to oppose it.

YMMV

That would be a lot less annoying if those request would be posted in the correct sub-forum in the first place : Suggestions for the next version of OOTP

edit : Of course I don't talk about the topic openner who asked a legitimate question, but the user who made the request to have that in the game. He is here since long enough to know better.
