I started with regular MLB leagues, but switched to fictional after learning the game better. With real players, I tend to let "names" get in the way of making a solid deal and making my team better.

All 3
![]() Started with MLB and to be fair I don't dabble much anymore. I have started an iOOTP league in modern times just to make it easy to pick up and play. Plus who wants to go through 6 levels of minors? Fictional is where it's at. Enough said. Historical is fun, mostly. I usually play God and watch history unfold in different ways rather than play it out. It feels like cheating when I roughly know how different players will turn out. This version I've done a lot of historical fiction...random debut and my most recent creation: WWII stops baseball and a new league starts in 1947, using 90% of the 1942 players with random players from '43-'46 as well as some handpicked real life players entering the draft at the appropriate time. For the most part though it will be a fictional league when the original class retires |

All 3, but Current MLB is kind of boring to me. Part of the fun of the game is coming up with interesting league structures, stories, and uniforms.

I mainly play 2 historical and 1 fictional which I only play to do some gaming with my nephew.
I prefer historical because its more fun for me to work with names I know and can put a face and story with. For instance, I had an opportunity to trade for Ty Cobb but I didnt because he was an ass and I didnt want him on my team, even though he might add some wins. I just cant form any kind of attachment with fictional players. Setting up league structures and having drafts is a game in itself, but I wont stay with what I've created if its fictional. |

I'm playing a pseudo-college set up fictional game. What I do is I have a major league with age minimum at 21, max at 25. Draft happens in the offseason, all draft prospects are 21 (but if they're late 21's then they might turn 22 before the season starts are only have 4 season careers rather than 5 years) and development for both hitters and pitchers is set to 2.000. No minor leagues, unlimited secondary roster. It's been an absolute blast so far to play.

Fast-sim Online league! One season per week keeps it interesting as you are constantly turning over your players and you can enjoy hundreds of seasons of history already in the books.

Mostly online, where I currently play in all three kinds of leagues -- historical, real MLB and fictional. No doubt at all that solo leagues inevitably lose my interest, while online leagues suck me in, once I get past the first season getting to know my team.
Of the the three kinds of online play: * I'd give the edge to fictional leagues, especially when scouting is on. * Real MLB leagues work quite well, too, although the transition to fictional players over the first few years can cause league membership to be unstable... and the large size of a MLB league can cause a few problems. * Historical leagues can be fun, but there's something about knowing how things are "supposed to go" historically that is less ideal. Also, the default database does not give you enough players for a real minor league system. After playing in many online and solo leagues, I'd have to say the thing that most often messes things up for me is when the talent pool gets out of wack -- usually too many high ratings players, but occasionally too few. In my opinion, the game engine handles this poorly and player development doesn't feel right. Expansion, contraction, feeder leagues, and skill bonus schemes can all lead to this.

I play fictional and historical. I really like to play historical, with development on (I set talent change randomness to 50) and recalc off. With 12 I started a league like this in 1906 and played it through 1936. I'm now doing a similar league using 13.
