recommendations for a new game
I have been playing ootp since ootp 11 and I have really never played anything outside of the normal "standard" game (lex.. starting in 2011,2012 ect...) I was wondering if anyone had some settings or personal favorites for game types, Maybe being an expansion team or idk just some neat custom games people enjoy. Im looking to spice it up a little bit. Thank you.

For me, I started a fictionnal league in 2012 with all fictionnal settings, team, players, rules...etc Every now and then I insert some expansion teams. I took over a team only in 2024 (before I was only simming in order to have some league history before I manage a team)
I'm totally addict to that game (now in 2044) I sim game-by-game in the season, but I play all playoffs games |

I have always played the "standard" game as well and although I really enjoyed it I wanted something a little different with a lot more control. So I am starting my own fictional league that will start with the 2012 season and has one team from each state. I am hoping that this really pulls me in and that I can run this league for seasons to come.

If you do a fictional league, look at all of the best, youngest players in the league prior to the inaugural draft. Rename them after all your friends from school so you can really pay attention to their stats, progress, injuries, news and careers.

Create a standard fictional Major American League with a starting date of about 2002. Sim it forward ten years and then pick a team and take it over.
It will be fictional, but all the teams will be familiar, there will be a history, every team will have a logo and a stadium, and it will be a brave new world. |

I don't understand the love for fictional leagues. (NOTE: I am not criticizing it in ANY way or trying to imply it is wrong to like that style, just that I don't understand the appeal.)
I currently run a modern and an expansion Toronto team. I may do a somewhat fictional world by using the random debut feature... just to change things up. |

It's alternate history. Some people can see the appeal of it (see "The Universal Baseball Association, Inc., J. Henry Waugh, Prop."), while others can't.
In the end, it's a simply a matter of taste. It's your game, play it your way. |

In the 42 years of league history I added minor leagues and feeder leagues every few years. Then I added independent leagues from Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Canada. Of course somewhere in the 1930s I must have inadvertently clicked the import historical rookies box, so when I decided to take on the hapless LA Swarm, starting in leftfield: Ted Williams. Of course I unchecked the box, but it is actually kind of cool that this happened. It adds some charm to the league. And those hapless Swarm? They have a 19-10 record and lead their division. |

I love regional-based leagues. I'm working on a project of a league with major leagues in one US region, minor leagues in other reigons (with an entire minor league level in Japan). But the friends Idea sounds cool too.

This may sound odd to you but La Liga del Caribe de Beisbol is a lot more real to me than the MLB universes are. I definitely prefer my universe over MLB's. To me, MLB universes are too restrictive and too dull. I'd go so far as to say that historical replays are more interesting to me than modern MLB. To each his own. And to respond to the OP. Have a look at some dynasty reports. I'm sure you will get some great ideas there. Not trying to exclude some of the great dynasties that I have read over there but my three favorites are: Islandian Pro Alliance Orcin's Story Portland Racoons (ABL) If you read just some of these great stories you will walk away with a new perspective on how to approach the game that works best for you. I think you'll find that you take a piece from each author and build a keeper-league that you will never restart. Enjoy! Last edited by Honorable_Pawn; 01-03-2013 at 10:37 PM. |

Oh, one last thing.
Even though it is not for me, some people playing in online leagues swear by them and could never go back to solo-play again. Maybe you could try one of them out. Last edited by Honorable_Pawn; 01-03-2013 at 10:37 PM. |

I started in 1871 with the early greats, made my way through the history of baseball my way. The what ifs. What if Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson and Cy Young were on the same team.
What would happen if Babe Ruth hit more homers than in realife. What if some of the early greats did not pan out? That is my way to enjoy the game.

I setup a historical replay of the 1912 season. It was an interesting year for the Boston Red Sox. First year in Fenway, and a World Series win.
Except to make it more interesting, I've swapped the 2004 Red Sox for the 1912 version. When that season raps up, I'll probably drop the 1912 squad into 2004 and see who does better.

I find many of these ideas to be bizarre, but they say that one man's trash is always another man's treasure, and I'm sure that a lot of people think that how I like to play is really bizarre.
So what I'm trying to say is this - let's all go for it. It's our game, let's play it however the Hell we want to. |

I use the MLB/MiLB/NCAA Div 1/ HS (550 teams) structures. Players are all fictional now in 2019, because I started back in OOTP 6 and all MLB players are gone. To keep mine interesting, I rename all the first round draft picks to people I know or old ball players/celebrities from the present/past. This way when I am glancing through minor league stats I can regonize some players. Elvis is an average MR, Babe can hit his weight, but Hugh Hefner is a stud 1B....
