How many draft rounds?

How many rounds do you hold for the amateur draft for a 16 team league with 3 minor league teams for each team?

What's a good number?

General rule of thumb is 5 times the number of minor league levels. So for your 3 minor league levels, you should be around 15 rounds. Also, I would have the game generate enough players for 18-20 rounds, so you have some undrafted free agents.

I agree with Fyrestorm.....I'm in the 11th season of my fictional league (2x8 team major leagues, 3 levels of minors) and have had excellent results with 15 draft rounds with enough players created for 18 rounds.

I'd modify this recommendation slightly. In one of my universes every MLB club has 7 minor league teams at 5 levels -- with 2 clubs at both the A level and the rookie level.

The above computes to 35 rounds for me. Actually though, I bump it up to 40 rounds because my rookie clubs tend to struggle generating guys to promote to the short A level. Finally, I generate enough players to populate 50 rounds of drafting because sometimes the draft is way too heavy at certain positions, like catcher. In the past I have had franchises with about 10 catchers on each rookie club because of this.

My opinion is no more than 25 rounds. The way I think of it is you're drafting enough guys to fill out your rookie league team. I know some draftees move higher up in your organization but your organization already has enough players to move up or down accordingly to fill out all the minor league rosters. If not, you hit up free agents.
