OOTP 14 Career Progress Thread

md5423 made a thread like this for the last couple releases so I thought I'd keep the tradition alive.

Well since I started the thread I'll get it going.

I'm trying to turn the Twins into something that resembles a major league franchise. Just finished our second full week and we're sitting at 9-9. Considering the team I'll consider that a small victory.

So far early stars are most of the usual suspects for the Twins.

Mauer is batting .333 with 9R 3HR 8RBI. Willingham is batting .338 with 14R 4HR and 15 RBIs. The 18Ks aren't helping him though. Finally the surprise is Chris Parmelee who's batting .349 with 3HR and 7RBI.

As the Twins my pitching sucks of course. First game of the season Perkins got hurt. He tore a muscle so now he's out for 12 months. I have Jared Burton closing for the moment but his first save opportunity he gave up like 4 runs and lost the game. He's since settled down and gotten 4 saves but his ERA is currently 9.95. My starters have been pretty bad. Vance Worley is 2-0 with 3.32 ERA in 21.2 innings and Ryan Pressly has suprisingly gone 3-0 with a 1.31 ERA in 20.2 innings.

Finally I had 3 major injuries. Perkins is out for the year like I said and Liam Hendriks is out for 4 weeks. My only position player hurt is Ryan Doumit who's out for 3 weeks.

So, so far so good for my goal of playing .500.

My ex is 5.2, 121 and runs faster than a scared rabbit. She plays SS.

She's yours for a snowcone, any flavor.

My 2013 Astros are currently sitting at 31-54 on July 4. My owner is upset. Right field has been a black hole of suck for most of the year (MIGHT finally have found someone to play decently there). Injuries forced me to call up George Springer before I wanted to do so. My pitching staff has been a pile of suck, but they're getting better. So yeah, been rough.

One bright spot has been Brett Wallace. He's hitting .319/.392/.526, good for 2.6 WAR.

Josh Willingham and Ryan Pressley both get suspensions for two separate fights that happened in the same game. A 3 game suspension for Pressley and a 6 game one for Willingham. Quite a heated game with the Rangers.

First international amateur signing period, and I blew $2 million to land an 80 POT catcher out of Costa Rica. Not going to be great defensively (45 ability, 50 arm), but with batting potentials of 65 CON and 80 POW, I'll probably end up making him a 1B.

Split a 2 games series with Miami that included an 18 inning loss then split a 4 game series with Texas. Now on to Detroit!

Oh yeah, picked up a 77 POT infielder for under $300k as an international amateur. He was listed as a SS, but with fielding ratings of 75/40/75/50, I think he'll be a 3B.

Argh. Better than me. Swept by the Tigers. That's twice the Tigers have swept me this season and it just started.

Just made the following trades with my Astros, trying to get some younger-ish guys who are still cheap who can actually play a bit at the MLB level while unloading some of the older guys on the roster.

Trade 1
Houston gets SP Hyun-Jin Ryu (72/75) and MR Paco Rodriguez (36/60).
LA Dodgers get CL Jose Veras, SP Jordan Lyles, and $200k in cash (that I forgot to take off).

Should improve both my rotation and bullpen, and both guys are still under team control. Ryu worries me, but he can't do worse than the guys I've been running out there all year.

Trade 2
Houston gets SP Christopher Rusin (48/49).
Chicago Cubs get SP Erik Bedard.

Rusin's going into AAA at first, but may crack the rotation in September or next year if he does well.

Trade 3
Houston gets RF John Mayberry Jr.
Philadelphia gets 1B Carlos Pena and 2B Delino DeShields Jr. (I hate his projected skills).

Mayberry helps my OF issues and covers for Chris Carter going 1B/DH full-time without Pena around, plus he's arb-eligible after the year so I don't have to keep him around if he looks expensive.

Playing as the Cubs. My plan is to play out the first year normally and see where things go then enter a full rebuild in the off-season. I might look to get rid of some players at the trade deadline to contending teams.

I'm the Boston Red Sox, and I just finished up the 2016 season. 95-67, second place in the AL East. We clinched a wild card spot, and so did the Toronto Blue Jays (89-73). In the play-in game, Brandon Morrow took a no-hitter into the eighth inning.

He began the eighth inning by giving up a four pitch walk to Jose Bautista. After that, he struck out David Renfroe and Matt Wieters. Seth Smith came up to bat, and he sucked all year. Somehow, he managed to hit a comebacker up the middle that snuck between Jose Reyes and Absdrubal Cabrera. Bautista scored. 3-1, Toronto. He got the next batter out.

My closer, Drew Storen, comes in to begin the ninth inning. He shuts down the first two batters, and then gives up a solo shot to Gose. He walks the next batter, and gets the third out when he induces a weak ground ball to to Middlebrooks at third. 3-1, Toronto. I was thinking rally. I wanted the playoffs.

Boone Logan comes in for Toronto. He proceeds to walk Tzu Wei-Lin and Xander Bogaerts. Justin Upton hits a single to left field, and the bases are loaded for Will Middlebrooks. Middlebrooks strikes out. Jose Bautista comes up, and he strikes out. David Renfroe came up to the plate, and he hit a long fly ball - to the warning track - ...

We needed this. We needed this one hit. It changed everything.

He hit a long fly ball for out number three.

Now, the off-season is just about to begin. I spent 74 million plus constructing this team in the off-season. I added Upton, Wieters, Bautista, Smith, Cahill, Papelbon ... but we couldn't make it to the first round. This was supposed to be Boston's year. Now I'm heartbroken.

I don't know if I should trade everyone, or if I should give my young players (de la Rosa, Webster, Workman, Bradley Jr., Lin, Renfroe, and Bogaerts) a chance to mature around the established cast and give it a go next year.

I do know that I hate the goddamn Blue Jays for making the ALDS and then getting swept by the AL Central, sub-500 Detroit Tigers.

Swept by Boston. Pedroia almost single handedly beat me.

edit: Oops it was a 4 game series and I managed a win in the last game. Pedroia was on the bench.

Offseason highlight: CC Sabathia retires due to CEI. Certainly puts a damper on the Yankee's WS win over Washington.

Just quit from the Catalan Dragons in the spanish junior league. I managed them as an expansion team for 6 years and just delivered their first championship. I built up a really nice team and just had an outstanding last season. I scored 149 out of 100 with 74 wins and 22 losses. I was top for pretty much every stat both pitching and batting. The unfortunate thing is a lot of the players are now too expensive to hold onto and will move on to the majors or are too old for the league. But I will miss that infield that I put together. I think Ill take a year out and then see what job offers arrive.

I signed a middle reliever from Japan an off-season ago. He was rated 8-6-5 at 22. His demand was modest ($875,000), but I negotiated him down to $625,000. In his inaugural season, he served as my primary set-up man. He appeared in 70 games, pitched 91.1 innings, and struck out 124 batters. He also walked 48 and gave up 14 home runs. The next year, I decide to give him the closer job out of Spring Training. He has electric stuff and he's young, so I figured he may be the guy to set my franchise's saves record. In 43 games, he's pitched 41.2 innings, and has struck out 54 batters. He's walked 17 and given up 2 home runs. Unfortunately, he's no longer my close because Sean Doolittle complained and demanded a trade. But, Izumo Shirai is leaving quite the impression on my team (and others) when he comes out in the eighth inning and shuts them down for a slash line of .194/.291/.288 against. Yikes.
