Team Chemistry

Does it matter? If so how does it work and where can I see what my teams chemistry is?

I wonder about this same exact thing too. Can a team have too many leaders? Ya know, too many chiefs and not enough indians kind of thing. I doubt that it is modeled and that is is probably best to just have the highest sum of leadership on your team as possible.

Then again, Marcus is smart dude...and tricky. For these reasons I do try to limit myself to just a handful of leaders for pitchers and a handful for position players.

Team Chemistry

That would be a cool addition to immersion. Your team captain requesting a meeting to discuss how the new prima dona outfielder is destroying the clubhouse.

In real life team chemistry is an overrated concept. There are plenty of examples of teams that don't really get along, winning. The opposite is also true. More than one coach and GM has moaned that he'd like his team to be a little less friendly from time to time.

Joe Maddon would disagree with you. He has built a career on clubhouse chemistry. All of the players in the league know that Tampa is a great place to play.

Well, Oakland A's won in 70s despite players really hate each other (at least at thr time), so here's your counter example...(not to mention the Bronx Zoo...)

IMO I think chemistry has it's affect and with two teams of equal talent the one with the better chemistry MIGHT win out but when it comes down to it, Talent trumps Chemistry. The Oakland A' and the Bronx Zoo teams were just downright so good. I also think Maddon has gotten more out of some of his Tampa teams than the talent might suggest.

So while I don't collect players only because of their high leadership ability I will use it to choose between two players that are close in talent. Same goes for the other personality factors in the game.

Does team chemistry have something to do with how well the manager and coaches "handle rookies, players, veterans"? To me, a coach that can't handle certain bad influences will eventually hurt his team's chances to win. Too much clubhouse distraction.

The better the personnel handle these players, the less likely things will fall apart?

Team Chemistry is just Ned Colleti's excuse for the Dodgers not being able to hit the ball despite having a $200mill payroll!

In game it would be interesting, but then it might run the risk of heading into Football Manager terriotry with alot of pointless fluff. The brilliance of OOTP is it's about baseball, not press conferences, if you see what i mean.

But it's even more brilliant game design when good team chemistry means players aren't grumpy when either they personally suck, or the team's record sucks. Since morale has been a viewable, and presumably important, element to the game for a while, I'd guess that somehow, it all matters and affects player performance.

Haven't we been over this once before?

The idea of "team chemistry" is way overrated.

You watch much baseball?

The Giants have won two World Series in three seasons with chemistry. One could argue that the leadership and chemistry lost by Posey's injury contributed to their second place finish in 2011.

Or maybe losing a guy who hit .305 and won the ROTY award the previous year and was hitting .285 when he got injured and was replaced by a couple of guys who collectively hit something like .200 may have had something to do with it.

In truth, there's no reason to construct the fictitious category of "chemistry" when what you're really describing is talent. Nobody talks about "chemistry" in individual sports like tennis, but whether Venus Williams has a bad year because of injuries or the Giants have a bad year because of injuries, it's largely the same thing. It's not the "chemistry" that is suffering, it's the level of talent.

I'm a big Cubs fan but am currently reading Tony Larussa's book. He definitely believes in team chemistry but I'm not sure of the true definition. The Cardinals overcome injuries and stay afloat with lesser talents than most (it seems like anyway). From Daniel Descalso to Matt Carpenter to Pete Kozma to Matt Adams to whoever is in the bullpen at any moment TLR always wanted to foster a "family" attitude. Now, when the Cards have won, they have had very solid talent. There are also probably managers out there who would have squandered that talent. I think the issues are 1) there is no true definition of team chemistry and 2) since there is no real way to quantify it, you are never going to have a consensus. Hell, I don't know...maybe it's all the drunk driving the Cardinals, TLR and their announcers did

I think team chemistry can only be discussed post facto. If a team wins then all little disputes are forgotten. If a dominant team fails it is because of bad chemistry because it can't be about the talent. I honestly think that we humans must invent some intangible reasons to explain why certain things happen.
